Patrick's obituary
Patrick Michael Vogel, age 66, of Carmichael, California, died January 15, 2023. He was born on October 10, 1956 in Manhasset, New York to Dr. Francis Stephen and Joyce Vogel, who predeceased him.
Patrick is survived by Susan, his soulmate and devoted wife of over 40 years. Together, they built a beautiful home and life filled with cherished memories, meaningful travels, and the joy of raising their two children, Jennifer and Stephen. Patrick was a doting and active father, and he later embraced his role as father-in-law to Stephen’s wife, Suzanna, and Jennifer’s husband, Dustin. He became a grandfather to Walter in November 2022.
Patrick was one of six children; his siblings were Stephen, Joseph, Hans, Daniel, and Mary. They grew up in Orange County, North Carolina.
Patrick graduated from Duke University School of Medicine in 1981 and the UCSF Department of Radiology Interventional Radiology Program in 1989. He became a respected practice partner at Radiological Associates of Sacramento and worked as a Vascular and Interventional Radiologist for 34 years. He was known regionally for his meticulous and high quality work, later in life working closely with cardiac surgeons performing complicated pediatric procedures.
Outside of work, Patrick was passionate about gardening, landscaping, hiking, cycling, traveling, playing piano, fixing and building things, and tinkering with his vintage miniature train sets. He cherished his annual trips to Hawaii, especially the long relaxed days spent snorkeling with his wife, captivated by the beauty and vibrant life beneath the ocean’s surface. He had a special fondness for holidays, particularly Christmas and Easter, and cherished the time-honored traditions he shared with his family. He was immensely proud of his two children, wholeheartedly supporting them in every pursuit.
Like so many of us, Patrick found it difficult to express feelings of struggle to those around him. He faced a battle with mental illness in the time leading up to his passing, and although he found it difficult to see himself as lovable during his hardest moments, nothing could have been further from the truth—he was deeply cherished by all who knew him. We share this as a reminder of the struggles many may hold inward without the language to express them, and the importance of compassion and support for those navigating unseen challenges.
Patrick will be remembered for creating a life full of love & protection for his family. He will be remembered for his humor, intellect, curiosity, dedication, and the support and mentorship he offered his colleagues. His presence has and will continue to be profoundly missed by all of us.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Patrick’s honor to the Effie Yeaw Nature Center in Carmichael, California. This was a place where Patrick found peace and renewal almost daily, walking with his dogs and family along the American River. Supporting the Nature Center ensures that others can continue to experience the same serenity and connection to nature that meant so much to him.
