Pat's obituary

Patrick Leon Stroud, born June 10, 1956 in Sacramento, California, crossed over into the next world on Monday, September 15, 2025, in Catania, Sicily. He had been diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia the previous Friday.

Pat, as he was known to all, retired in 2024 from a 42-year career as a systems analyst and programmer. He was considered an expert in both FoxPro and helping his fellow employees. He worked for a number of well-respected companies including HDR, Valcom, ALR Systems and Software, Security Benefit, Quest Solutions, Aviva, Sungard/Central Square Technologies, and Harco Fittings/Ipex.

Pat told anyone who would listen that he was an Air Force “brat,” moving every couple of years as a child until his stepfather, an Air Force colonel, was assigned to SAC Headquarters, Offutt AFB in Bellevue, Nebraska. He was a rabid Cornhusker football fan, a reluctant Hawkeye fan, a classic rock nerd, a world-champion napper, and a bit of a packrat. He also loved cats and refused to adopt another after his beloved Purrcy died. In 2024 Pat decided he was ready to travel Europe, learn as many new languages as he could, and enjoy la dolce vita in Italy.

At his best, Pat never met a stranger, could hold ridiculous amounts of information in his head stretching back to his earliest childhood, and could be generous to a fault. At his not-so-best? Let’s not go there, except to say that he could be irreverent, sarcastic, and often used logic as a weapon for emotional arguments. No matter what side of his personality you were on, Pat made sure you (and other people close to him) were aware of how he felt.

Pat had many dreams that he was unable to live out, such as the previously mentioned traveling around Europe, walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain, riding the best roller coasters in Germany, continuing to empty the bucket list of rock concerts he wanted to see, fervently hoping for a Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd reunion, and enjoying a relatively stress-free retirement. He was looking forward to a mid-November in Paris to celebrate a 20th wedding anniversary and his wife’s 60th birthday. Pat fully expected to be cured of his cancer, and be able to continue on with his carefully constructed plans.

Pat is survived by his wife of 19 years, Julie; son Jacob, of Homewood, Illinois; son Eric of Greensboro, North Carolina/Carlentini, Sicily; stepson Alex Hannon, of Houston, Texas; sister Linda Bennett of Pollock Pines, California; nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald Stroud and Helen Lewis; stepparents Charles Lewis and Betty Stroud; and brothers Michael Stroud, Mark Lewis, and Martin Lewis.

In keeping with Pat’s wishes, his body was cremated and no services are planned. If you wish, memorial gifts can be made to your local PBS station or The University of Nebraska at Omaha College of Information Science and Technology.
