Patrick's obituary

Patrick Cavanaugh, a venturesome traveler, made his last journey, into the universe, on June 9, 2024 at the age of 82. His loving family, wife, Ellyce, and daughter, Sara, were at his side as he embarked on this final voyage.

Born March 18, 1942, the day after St. Patrick’s Day. Missing being born on his patron saint’s day he still embraced his Irish roots. The window of the world opened up to him at a young age. From the time he was a child he was a journeyman, living in many places from St. Simons Island to Shanghai, Maryland to New York.

During his younger days he started his own handmade craft shop, Maggie’s Farm, which enabled him to pursue his hippie life style and world travel.

As he grew older his wanderlust took him to places off the beaten path.. Afghanistan, trekking in the Himalayas, Nepal and India were some of his favorites. These journeys provided colorful stories told with a sense of history and humor, bringing them to life. Patrick could always be counted on to lighten the atmosphere with his unrivaled wit and gifted storytelling. Perhaps this was the result of kissing the Blarney Stone in Ireland on his honeymoon.

Some of the highlights of his life were marrying Ellyce at their cabin in the woods and becoming a father with Sara’s birth in 1986. Patrick was not only Ellyce’s best friend, but the love of her life, who supported and encouraged her to pursue her life’s work and passions. Together they created lasting memories through 42 years of partnership.

From a very young age, Sara showed an uncanny interest in one of Patrick’s passions, basketball. As she got older her prowess in the sport delighted Patrick to no end. He was her number one fan, from CYO, AAU, High School and college, and would travel far and wide to watch and support her at every game. He absolutely adored her and was proud of all her accomplishments. But these feelings were mutual. Sara loved and appreciated his ceaseless support and generosity. She loved that he was a jokester and that she could count on him for advice (whether she took it or not).

In its infancy, Patrick joined Rolling Stone Magazine’s artistic community which became his life’s work. This enabled him to work with and meet some of the most iconic characters of the age; Jann Wenner, Annie Leibowitz, Mick Jagger, the Eagles, Hunter S. Thompson, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton. At Rolling Stone he made life-long friendships which he cherished. He was a loyal and devoted friend and colleague who cultivated deep and lasting relationships throughout his life.

Patrick, Ellyce and Sara treasured their annual summer vacations on Hatteras Island at the beach, but even more so, Patrick was nourished and sustained by his country life at his cabin in Cuddebackville. Fifteen acres of woodlands, grassy meadow and abundant garden provided sustenance and meaning to his life. He took special pride in his garlic crop which he shared generously with friends and family. His mother, Elizabeth, called him the ‘landed gentry'.

Throughout his life, Patrick was not only loving, but was a character with lots of character. His dead-pan teasing, sense of humor and unrivaled wit endeared many. His mere presence in a room brought joy and comfort to others and will be deeply missed.

Patrick will always be remembered as a gentle giant of a man who was content with his life. Blessed is he who makes his companions laugh.
