Patrick's obituary

Patrick Lee Caldwell of Carrollton, Texas passed away at his home on Augusts 26, 2021. Born in Fort Scott, Kansas on July 28, 1951 to Murle and Lois Caldwell, Pat grew up in Columbus, Ohio where the family settled after his first birthday. The youngest of three children, Pat was the fourth dependent, earning his father Murle’s return from the war in Korea. Pat graduated from Upper Arlington High School in 1969 and went on to college at Ohio State, earning a degree in insurance and risk management.

Pat began working as a young man, throwing papers in elementary school, and later worked as a golf caddie at Scioto Country Club where he was fortunate enough to caddie for Jack Nicklaus and Bob Hope. Pat also enjoyed the outdoors as an avid Boy Scout, ultimately becoming an Eagle Scout. After working at Big Bear Grocery through college he began his career in Insurance. Pat married Cindy Strater in 1974 and the two eventually moved to Plano, TX where he became a father in 1980 with the birth of their son, Ben. His beloved daughter Kelly was born soon after in 1982.

While Pat found success in the insurance business, his real passion was building. He was a quick study and understood quickly how things “worked”. He built dune buggies, he built model airplanes, he built golf clubs, he built sprinkler systems, he built a wooden “go-kart” for his son and he eventually built a home for he and Cindy. His passion for custom home building was kindled then. So, when years of travel for work left him wanting more, he quit the insurance business and founded Caldwell & Family Custom Homes in 1996.

Pat and Cindy divorced in 1986 and in 1988 he married Linda Anderson and the two settled in Carrollton, TX. They both enjoyed travel, golf, and time with friends. A lifelong avid golfer, Pat was a single digit handicapper and was active for years at Prestonwood Country Club with Linda. He served in various roles including head of the Men’s Golf Association at the club. Pat also introduced his children, Ben and Kelly, to the game which made for many memories together. He loved to teach them, reminding them often to “hit your irons” and “sweep your woods”.

As a custom home builder there was no job too small or too big for Pat. From constructing a bathroom on his home golf course to expansive 11,000 square foot homes, he was always present, focused and fully committed to building with excellence. Even at his own expense, he was committed to building with integrity and quality. He could often be found with a tool belt around his waist as he worked with and at times alongside the trades working for him. He treated them well and they were loyal to him.

“Gramps”, “Grandpa Caldwell” read books, tumbled rocks and flew kites and model rockets with his grandchildren. He loved his family and made many happy memories. He was quick to say I love you and often I am proud of you. He provided for them and was present. He was generous and kind.

Pat was preceded in death by his mother Lois Ann Caldwell and Father Murle Lawrence Caldwell and sister, Barbara Ann Telford.

He is survived by his wife Linda Caldwell, son Ben Caldwell and wife Terri and 5 grandchildren, Cade, Callie, Caelyn, Cora Beth, and Canon, daughter Kelly Sterling and husband Ryan Sterling and 2 more grandchildren Luke and Kylie, his brother Mike Caldwell and wife Marie of Danville, Kentucky and his daughter Caitlin Caldwell and husband Rich Carroll of Livingston Manor, New York, his sister’s sons Scott and wife Teresa Telford and children Scottie and Laney of Cincinnatti, Ohio and Murle and Mor Wetzler Telford of Luxemborg, and his Aunt Marilyn Monahan of St Louis, Missouri.

A Memorial Service will be held in the chapel of Watermark Community Church (7540 Lyndon B Johnson Fwy, Dallas, TX 75251) on Tuesday, September 7th at 3:00pm.
