We first met Patty and her husband, Kjell, at a Bible study, and honestly, the start of our friendship was pure comedy. My wife, Judy, was certain Patty was someone she worked with. After a few awkward minutes and a round of introductions, we realized Judy was completely wrong! We all shared a huge laugh over the mix-up, and in the small talk that followed, we found out we were neighbors, living just a street apart and a block over. Clearly, fate (and a mistaken identity) wanted us to be friends. We quickly started hanging out with this awesome couple and became fast friends.
Patty and Kjell were the best kind of people: the kind who always said, "Stop by anytime!"—and truly meant it. Their place became our favorite hangout, where we'd cycle between the pool on a warm day or the cozy fire pit when the weather cooled down.
Patty adored people and loved telling the best stories about their many adventures. But the memory that still makes us chuckle involves that "stop by anytime" promise. One late afternoon, Judy and I were out for a walk in the neighborhood and decided to test the limits of their hospitality.
It was prime relaxing time—Patty and Kjell had already settled in for the evening, probably in their pajamas, reading books. Judy picked up her phone and called Patty. When Patty asked what we were up to, Judy's answer was pitch-perfect: "Oh, just sitting down by your pool."
I can only imagine the look on their faces! They were great sports, though. They scrambled to get dressed, came down to the pool, and we had a fantastic, hilarious surprise visit. Of course, we didn't miss the opportunity to gently remind them that they did say "stop by anytime."
That's just one story, and we have many more fun adventures with this wonderful couple. We love Patty and Kjell so much. Though we'll miss our Patty here with us tremendously, the thought of her up in Heaven, dancing with Jesus, brings us so much joy!
