Otis's obituary
Otis Mattox, Jr. was born in Tampa, FL on March 15, 1964, to the parents of Otis Mattox, Sr., and Vertie Bell Baker Mattox in Tampa. Coupled with his parents, he enjoyed having fun times with sisters Delores Baker and Yvonne Baker; each preceded him in death and will be remembered as a blessing.
Mr. Mattox attended Hillsborough County Public Schools and graduated from Robinson High School, Class of 1982. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged after serving his country for three years. Subsequently, he enrolled at Tampa Technical Institute in Computer Engineering Technology, graduated with an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree, and earned certification as a Linguistic Broker/Certified Central Service Technician (CRCST) at Brewster Technical College.
As an entrepreneur, Mr. Mattox purchased ownership rights in the Roadway Package Service (RPS) delivery service, which was later acquired by the FedEx Ground network. His service route included Tampa’s downtown locations where he worked until retiring from FedEx in 2019 when his health failed. Additionally, he served as a customer service representative with the Maximus Company which provides communities with critical health and human service programs. Since 2018, he served as secretary for the Board of Directors of the Florida Gulf Coast Paralyzed Veterans of America, Tampa Chapter.
In the Spring of his life, Otis married Veola Williams Mattox, the mother of his daughter O’Quicha Mattox until life’s season-affected change. Even so, he loved and cherished his daughter and grandson, Cassan Johnson until the Lord took him eternally home.
Mr. Mattox accepted Jesus Christ and committed to His service under Rev. Johnathan McKnight, Pastor, Sanctuary of Praise, Orlando; Rev. Andre Mitchell, Jesus People Family Worship Center (Tampa); served Bishop Noel Jones, the City of Refuge Church in Gardena, California as an Armorbearer and media technician; shared the Word of God through pulpit preaching, and lived life as a testament of God’s mercy and grace.
Otis Mattox, Jr., was a gentle giant who was thoughtful and caring. He could captivate an audience with his charm and affectionate smile. Among his most enjoyable adventures were cruising trips on the Royal Caribbean and finding ways to enjoy life to the fullest.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his amazing daughter, O’Quicha Mattox; grandson, Cassan Johnson; Godmother, Patricia Dubose; nieces, nephews, cousins, other sorrowing relatives, and friends. Special thanks to his nurses at the Veterans Hospital and Hospice House, Robinson High School Class of 1982, and the Florida Gulf Coast Paralyzed Veterans of America, Tampa Chapter.
