Om's obituary

On the opposite side of the world on October 15, 1929, a boy who would grow to lead a life of adventure, passion, laughter and devoted love was born. With his beautiful spirit, Om Prakash Khanna became a man who profoundly touched the hearts and lives of every person he encountered.

Om, 91, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2021 in Littleton, Colorado. He was born in Lahore, India to Shiv and Sohn Khanna as the fourth born child of nine siblings. He lived with his family in Lahore until 1947, when they were abruptly forced out due to the partition of India. His family settled in New Delhi where his passion for learning and education led him to pursue an undergraduate degree.

Driven by his adventurous spirit, Om left his home country of India in 1958 for America. His long journey to Boulder, Colorado proved to be as riveting as his days of hiking the Himalayas. Om's pursuit of a masters degree in business education led him from CU to Adam State University and ultimately to the University of Northern Colorado, formerly Colorado Teachers College, in Greely, Colorado.

Chance would have it, the president of the International Club would be a beautiful, blue eyed woman. According to Om himself, he knew the moment he saw her that it was love at first sight. One year later, Om married Merrelyn Miller on September 23, 1961 in Paradox, Colorado.

Together, Om and Merrelyn lovingly raised their two children, Pamela, born in 1962, and Kamlesh, born in 1963. Om began his long and successful career as an auditor for the USDA in 1962, working there for 18 years. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to simultaneously open numerous businesses, beginning with Handicrafts of India and Treasures’ East, both Indian imports stores, Silver Bubble, a soap and sundries store and Fisherman’s Broiler, a seafood restaurant. In 1975, Om and Merrelyn founded It’s Your Move, a chain of game stores that is still operating today.

Om’s clever curiosity of culture, experience and people led them to travel the world together. No matter where he was, he had a charismatic gift for connecting with others. That same gift resonated throughout his life with his friends and family, especially as he poured his unconditional love and genuine presence into each of his five grandchildren’s lives: Brock Berglund, Brant Berglund, Savannah Khanna Kilde, Kendall Khanna, and Madison Khanna Dollar.

The life of Om rang true to his name which means “the sound of the universe.” His peaceful harmony with those who surrounded him brought joy and laughter into the world. Om will forever be a light in all of our hearts.

We love and miss you forever.
