I met Olivia on Tuesday, 6/30/15, while speaking at Paul Mitchell The School in Sherman Oaks, CA. I presented our brand of hair salons, Hairzoo, to over 150 future beauty professionals at a “career night”. One person stood out from everyone in attendance and she sat to my left eagerly listening and participating. It was Olivia. She stood out from everyone else in attendance by her attentiveness. She sat on the edge of her seat, listened and asked questions. After my presentation she made a point to come up to me to introduce herself and ask some more questions. Olivia was always prepared, and I could tell from my first interactions with her that she was going to be an amazing career woman as a hair stylist. We kept in touch as she still had a couple more months of school before graduating. While still in school she scheduled a tour of the salon on Thursday, 7/02/15, as she wanted to get a feel of the environment and the fellow team members. We kept in contact while she was preparing to graduate and pass the state exam. Once she passed her state exam, she became a full-time team member and embarked on her career as a licensed hair stylist with us. Olivia was an extremely hard worker as she worked a second job as a server at Japanese restaurant while working 40 hours a week at the salon.

Over the two years we worked together she made best friends with many of her team members. She was crowned the nickname “Olive” and was also referred to as “grandma” as she was always one to be responsible and make sure she got enough rest to make sure she got the most out of each day. The girls and Olivia would always hangout while working and afterwork. It’s was very fulfilling, and it warmed my heart to see the high degree of care, love and respect that everyone had for each other. Olivia always would do whatever was asked and did it with precision. If I needed something done perfectly, I would go to Olivia because she was extremely accountable, reliable and paid high attention to detail. I was asked again to speak to the future beauty professionals at Paul Mitchell The School in Sherman Oaks, CA and this time I took two team members one of which was Olivia. I asked them to help me on stage to present to the current class of students and speak why and how they got into the cosmetology industry and to share about their experiences working at Hairzoo. In was the same auditorium where I first met Olivia back in June of 2015 but instead of being a student in the audience, she was professional in the industry presenting on stage. She ended of speaking to the 100 plus students and did a great job sharing about how she came to be a professional hair stylist and a successful career woman. She eventually got promoted to assistant manager and was one of our trainers. She loved what she did and always did it with a smile but more importantly we all loved her. The guests that came into the salon loved her as well and she was able to build quite the following. She made friends with everyone as it was natural for her. Everyone loved her.

We were all there when she got Mabel and she became the Hairzoo mascot. One time Mabel even attended our team member monthly meeting. Olivia and Mabel were irrespirable. Olivia and I would talk about our dogs and the funny things they do. Mabel was in the best care and Olivia put Mabel first. Olivia and Mabel would visit the salon and the team would start to say, “Hi Mabel, Mabel come here” in a very high pitch tone almost like “baby talk” and jump on their knees to start playing with Mabel. Olivia being a good Mom would get her water and keep a keen eye on her to make sure she wasn’t getting into something that would cause her harm. The bond these girls built over the two years working together in and out of the salon are a true blessing. The memories I have of Olivia will always rest in my heart and provide comfort. I am lucky enough that Olivia chose to work and begin her career with us. Friendships and memories were made.
She came to me in the first week September of 2017 and said she would be moving to Reno in about a month but wanted to make sure she gave me enough notice. I was very happy for her as I knew she was excited to begin the next capture of her life and career. We were all sad to see her leave, but I knew the girls would keep in touch with her as they were already planning trips and get togethers. Her last day was on Monday, 10/09/17, as she packed up her car and drove off. Prior to leaving she left her white toaster for the salon to use and to this day we still use it. When I am in the breakroom and I see the white toaster it’s a reminder of Olivia and all of the heartfelt, warm and fun memories.

I was hoping to attend this Sunday to share these stories in person. I unfortunately can not attend. I wanted to very badly be there so I could meet Olivia’s family, friends and see my former team members. I am heartbroken she is gone but blessed to have had her in my life. Rest in peace Olivia. You are loved and missed. - Gary Reed
I met Olivia through my friend Karen. We three 3 shared the love of our dogs: Sophie Anne(mine), Fliegl (Karen’s) and Olivia’s sweet Mabel.
I also had Olivia give Sophie Anne a trim and she was so patient with my girl.
Olivia had a gift with people and other animals. Her loss makes the world a bit less bright. The memories will remain.
How did she pass and is money still needed for the family for expenses? I noticed the goal was reached.

I can’t believe she’s gone. I had just moved back to the Bay Area and needed to find my new hairstylist. I finally found that in Olivia after much searching. She was kind, warm and very talented. I was over the moon finding her to do my hair. I loved what she did and it made me very very happy. I also had the pleasure of seeing her dog at the salon for my first appointment. We bonded over both being pet parents and giving advice about it. I knew her dog loved her and she her by how much she hovered not far from her. I can’t believe I won’t be able to see/have her again. I wish I had more than two appointments with her and I was looking so forward to sharing my new headshots with her at my next appointment. I wanted to share/show her that they did go well and to thank her for making it so. The last thing she told me was “I hope your headshots go well.” I will miss seeing you, Olivia and your darling dog. So sorry and sad your gone.
Olivia was such a sweetheart, talented artist, and aspiring student. She was my hair stylist and I would enjoy my conversations with her every time I visit. I haven’t seen her since she got into UC Berkeley (which was phenomenal!) and I moved away to another city. I’m so shocked by this news and send my condolences to her family, friends, and her beloved doggo. She and I would share our dog’s photos and said we would one day take our little ones out to the dog park in Richmond together. I remember her determination in getting into UCB and her excitement when she was accepted. She was nervous yet positive. Her vibes were inspirational and she will forever live in our memories.
I didn’t have the pleasure of knowing Olivia well. But in a few short encounters at Maxis I saw a truly wonderful human. Empathic, kind, open, and always on the look out for a chance to smile and laugh. A pleasure to be around, and someone who made life better just by being nearby. A tremendous loss for the world.

What a terrible loss for humanity. She was full of of life and cheer and goodwill, a positive life force that need.
Olivia Canak and Olivia Shoultz have 7 years between their ages. Olivia S. was embraced by Olivia Canak with her whole being as an older sister the first time our families got together. Olivia S. learned about love for little animals with Olivia C's attention and warm welcoming heart. Ill never forget Olivia for being so sensitive to our little one, at the time.
