“In his teenage years Olav was an avid birdwatcher spending many hours alone, with binoculars, enjoying the beauty of Jaeren, a stretch along the ocean close to Sandnes. Another hobby was playing the trumpet with Sandnes choir.
At the young age of 19, he joined an older friend and biked (with a “no gear bicycle”!) from Sandnes to Barcelona, Spain. They left on September 2, 1952, and stayed in hostels along the way. In France, he documented eating his first peach and was forever a fan. Some 1,800 miles/2,900 km later they reached their destination. His return ride home was a solo ride, and he was back in Norway on October 5. He was quite the athlete!”
