North's obituary

North Edward Carey, 74, of Tampa, FL, passed away on August 18th, 2024.

North was born to North F. and Norma in Flint, MI. At the age of 11 his family moved to Ft Lauderdale, FL where they spent their summers boating in the Bahamas as a family. After North graduated from Fort Lauderdale High School in 1968, he went on to study engineering at Notre Dame. While at Notre Dame, North joined the Varsity Fencing team, opening up a life long passion that he later passed on to his children.

After graduating with a Bachelor's in Aerospace Engineering and completing a Master's in Mechanical Engineering, he moved to Tampa, FL where he worked at Westinghouse. In 1976, North met his future bride, Marsha Gullo, at a Halloween party, and they enjoyed 45 years of marriage together before his passing.

North and Marsha had 3 children together, North J., Keith, and Deidre, who were primarily raised in Los Alamos, NM, where North took a job at Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1987. North took over the Los Alamos Fencing Club and transformed it into a competitive fencing organization. He taught his children his love for the sport, and coached many throughout the years. North loved electronics and will be fondly remembered working on computers, playing games on his PC, and always being the go to tech Mr Fix It.

In 2012, North retired and he and Marsha moved back to Florida. North enjoyed his retirement, filling it with travels, bridge club, and spending time with his friends, family, and beloved bride.

He is survived by his wife, Marsha, sons North and Keith and daughter Deidre, their spouses, one grandchild, mother Norma Carey, brother Todd Carey, and sisters Dawn Carey and Anne Tarkinson.

In lieu of flowers, we'd appreciate if you could donate to the University of Notre Dame Fencing program that meant so much to North and his family.
