Norm's obituary
Norman "Norm" Bruce Gibson, therapist, father, music lover, runner, and lifelong friend to many, died on Friday, August 19th, 2022 surrounded by his daughter and several close friends.
Norm was born on December 29, 1946 to parents Marguerite (Engelbert) and Murray Gibson. Throughout his life, Norm shared a close bond with his three brothers: Dennis (Ruth), Howard (Mary Louise), and Brian (Cheri), all characters in their own right. Norm was broken-hearted as he lost each of them over the past few years.
Norm received a Masters of Applied Psychotherapy from the University of Chicago. He was an avid collector of profound quotes and teachings - sharing much of his wisdom with thousands of "Rebuilders" while facilitating "Rebuilding When Your Relationship Ends" seminars. Members of the Rebuilding community will tell you that Norm changed their lives.
When Norm wasn't helping others through his psychotherapy practice and seminars, he was running, hiking, skiing, and camping. Although he was born and raised in Chicago, no place felt more like home to him than Colorado. He moved to Boulder in 1978 in order to fully indulge his love of the outdoors.
Norm studied Buddhist philosophy for over 40 years, and was proud of his robust meditation practice. He said, "Meditation is the best gift we can give ourselves in this lifetime. It joyfully opens my heart to others".
Norm lived his entire adult life with Bipolar Disorder, proving that mental illness does not dictate a person's ability to live an epic, meaningful, and love-filled life.
He is survived by his daughter SeaAnna Gibson, stepson Christopher Caldwell, three grandchildren, and countless adoring friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in Norm's honor.
