Norma was born Norma Teresa Alonso in Cuba on January 31, 1930. In 1950, she immigrated to the United States in 1950 where she worked in the garment industry in New York City. She became a skilled seamstress and continued to sew as a hobby throughout her life. She married her husband Ed Opperman in 1958 and became a US citizen in 1959.
