Ninfa's obituary
Ninfa Marie Castaneda was born on November 10, 1919 in Tepechitlan, in Zacatecas, Mexico. She came to the U.S. with her mother and sisters to join her brothers in 1928, and they settled in San Jose, where she spent the majority of her life, watching the city grow as she did. Ninfa lived in the family homes on 2nd and then 3rd street in downtown, graduated from Notre Dame High School in San Jose, and regularly attended services at St. Joseph’s Cathedral. While her sisters worked in the canneries, Ninfa would take care of her mother during the day, then work evenings at the Adult Education Center once her siblings were home from work. Ninfa married late in life, but it was worth the wait, because her husband Jesus was the love of her life, and they were married for twenty-two years, until his passing. Even though she finally left her family home when she married, she still stayed in the downtown area she knew and loved, close to family, moving to an apartment on 7th Street close to San Jose University. Ninfa had an adventurous spirit and was known for searching out and trying out rollercoasters with her husband. Ninfa loved to swim, loved playing Chinese Checkers, and enjoyed traveling.Ninfa passed away on March 3, 2022, in San Jose, California, at the age of 102.
Ninfa was preceded into death by her beloved husband Jesus Castaneda, by her sisters Acela Bernal, Auxilio Viramontes, Amparo Cervantes, Nahum Trevethan and Aurora Capas, and brothers Jose Cervantes, Hugo Cervantes, Patricio Cervantes and Joel Cervantes. She leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews who adored her and many friends who will miss her courage and humor.
