Thinking of Nina, her effervescence, her kindness and compassion for others -- enduring friendship.

When we gathered the weekend after Nina’s death in 2019 to mourn our loss together, there was a moment late in the afternoon, August 17, when Fred, Kathie and I took a brief respite for a stroll around Rittenhouse Square just to get some air.

By chance we happened upon a young man seated at a makeshift table with a typewriter, advertising himself as a “Dream Poet for Hire” available to compose a poem on the spot on any subject. Considering the occasion, I said the words on all of our minds, “Sudden death.”

He started tapping away on a small card approx. 4 x 5 inches, and when he had reached the end of the page perhaps no more than two minutes later, he whipped it out of his typewriter, signed it with a flourish, and handed it to me. The line spacing (and his typographical error) I attribute in large part to his speed, perhaps not to measured consideration, but I reproduce it here as closely as possible.

I put a bill in his donation jar. I shared it, as we walked, with Fred and Kathie, but no one else has ever seen it. Indeed, the poet himself has no record of it either as I am in possession of the original straight off the press, as it were.

For Nina’s birthday on April 4—her 85th—I’d like to share this impromptu poem about someone the poet never met or knew, just a spontaneous riff on the topic, for what it may be worth.

Too soon

the heart ceases to tick

an abrupt about turn

and with one last kick

the breath

escapes

the body

saddned [sic] are those surprised

by this quick escape

the artist

conjuring drama

in their last masterpiece

but soon feelings

are reflected

hopes of rest

and peace that awaits

for even if sudden

this slumber that awaits

is at least without pain.

those parts of the heart

left behind in the dust.

Katia and I were friends in childhood and I always admired Nina from that perspective: as another mother. Later, I realized she had become a lawyer when Lisa Scottoline mentioned her in a dedication for one of her books. Reading now about her life and all she accomplished, I am really bowled over. A tremendous loss to the world in addition to her family and friends. Both my parents also passed away that same summer...so I can imagine what you all are going through. Sending warm thoughts and condolences, even now, to all affected by this loss.

Niina and Michele were looking at photos. When I asked her what to put in her quilt, she pointed, impulsively, at the beautiful fresh, leafy swiss chard stalks from the farmer's market that morning. So Nina.Lovingly, Nancy
They are far from the real thing. But the photographs will have to do. They are really nice. They capture Nina, smiling, relaxed, dressed in baggy clothing, in the country, sitting or standing alone. They are on a shelf in the dining room. Very visible, and continuously so. The smile is in the mouth, of course, but also in the eyes. That is really the best.

Dear Nina,

You are one of the most strong, stable, lovable and entertaining people we know. Our times with you and Frank are always good fun. I have loved our many activities and projects together. You are a great friend. I plan to do more things in my life that I will dedicate to you, as is Frank.

Love from,
Nancy Bardach

Nina was such a loving and lovely friend who shared her heart, beauty and brilliant mind so generously. Jill and I never had enough time with her so we will miss her all the more and forever. We can only be happy and soothed that her last days were spent together with Frank and the family in the shadow of the magnificent Mount Denali which must have called her home.

A dear friend for more than 40 years, Nina was unfailingly kind and supportive to me and my (then baby) daughter Alice in our bereavement 37 years ago. We treasure our memories of Nina's love and concern, and grieve with her family for her loss.
I miss Nina terribly. She was a vibrant, wonderful friend.
Nina was generous and kind to me during the troubled times of my divorce. I always appreciated her openness and good humor and greatly regret not being able to attend the memorial, but I am a keynote speaker at a conference on the Future of Latinos at Duke University on that day. Nina and her many family and friends will be in my thoughts.
Though we remain heart broken at Nina’s death, we are nourished by memories of our times with her. Our world has lost one of its most generous, civic-minded and empathic citizens, all at a moment in our history when we can least afford to lose her. It behooves all of us to do our part in carrying on her work and t keep her rich legacy alive.
