Dear Nicki,

I am still in shock! I cannot believe you are gone. I cannot believe this is real!  Not only were you such a strong warrior but you fought for hope for others!  That is truly a great life accomplishment. Rest in peace dear sweet angel! Please watch over us especially the patients at Connecticut Children's Hospital and all of the staff! To Nicki's family, thank you for raising such an amazing human being. Sending my deepest condolences!

We are thinking of you during this difficult time. We are so sorry for your loss. It was such a pleasure to get to know Nicki while we lived in CT and worked for Gerber.

21 years ago I was a new nurse in training in the CCMC PICU. I have never forgotten Nicole and have carried her story of hope and courage with me over the years as a critical care nurse. Little did I know how much caring for her would have a profound impact on me, my career and my ability to care for others during the most vulnerable time in their lives. Nicole your purpose on this earth was greater than any of us will ever know. My sincerest condolences to all that loved her. May the fondest memories of her comfort you in the darkest of times. ❤️
14 years ago when I started at Connecticut Children’s on MS6, I was surrounded by staff members that were talking about this incredible young girl who was so brave and so resilient and beat the odds. You came up in conversation year after year and I was in such awe of you before even having the privilege to meet you. Then, years later, I was given the honor to be your nurse. Your smile, your calm presence, your courage through every long day and every procedure never wavered. You embraced each new nurse I was training, spread kindness throughout the unit with thoughtful notes, and left a huge impact on all of our hearts. How lucky I was to have learned from you! I am a better nurse, a better mother, and a better person because of the time I spent with you. I admired you from afar as I watched all your success at UConn, your dedication to Huskython and giving back, your excitement as you joined the Connecticut Children’s team after graduation. It was such a special moment when I got the opportunity to email you with congratulations on joining our Connecticut Children’s team. You began as a legend, then became a treasured patient, then a friend, and finally a colleague. I will never forget how your passion and enthusiasm shined in all aspects of your life. You are one of a kind, you will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for ALL that you achieved in your much too short time with us. My thoughts and prayers to the Cartier family and friends.

Words cannot express our sadness. May the comfort of God help you through this difficult time. Nicki was truly an inspiration to everyone she encountered.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you always.

I was saddened to learn about the passing of Nicki.

I knew Nicki mostly through her loving grandmother, Nancy, and watched her grow up to become a lovely young woman. Having also met her in person a few times, she was every bit as wonderful as I had heard.

What I remember about Nicki is that she had many challenges in her life. She faced those challenges head on with courage and a positive attitude. She didn't let these challenges prevent her from pursuing her goals and dreams.

I am so very sorry for your loss. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
I was new to Connecticut Children’s and the first family I took care of as a Child Life Specialist was Nicki and her family.  During her recovery I remember coming to work and getting paged, “Nicki is looking for you!”  We spent many hours playing and crafting together! I have been with Connecticut Children’s for 21 years and the story of my journey always starts with Nicki.  Thank you Nicki for touching my heart and shaping my career! ❤️
Thinking of you during this very sad time.
Sincerely,
Keith and Krissy Borgognone
