We were very sad to recently learn about Nicky’s passing in January. Danny and I have very fond memories of spending time with Nicky, Norie, Antoinette and Frankie on Victory Dr., where they were longtime neighbours and friends of my aunt and uncle. Nicky was a lovely person, always smiling. We belatedly send our sincere condolences to Norie and to all the family at this very difficult time. May he Rest In Peace.

My most fondest memory of Uncle Nick was in the hockey arena. Nicholas and my son Anthony played hockey together and Uncle Nick was always there ready to give support and watch the game.

My husband would always go and talk to Uncle Nick and Uncle Nick being the kind man that he was would listen to my husband's conversations/jokes but his focus was always on the game. He was so proud of Nicholas.

Our deepest condolences to you Zia Noreen, Antoinette, Frankie and their families.

Mirella and Joe Prestanizzi and Lina D'Amario.
Describing the influence my Uncle Nicky had on me is impossible to put in words. So many little things through my life he said or did that had a massive impact on me was just him being himself. I was always so proud to see him at furniture shows and say "that's my uncle" because of the tremendous respect everyone had for him. The warmth he always showed my family always touched me so deeply. Thank you for being my Uncle, my Godfather and for being one of the kindest warmest encouraging strong and generous people I have even known. Rest In Peace, we will miss you.

Papa, all my life you’ve been with me. When I was little, picking me up on your shoulders and making me smile; when I grew up, driving to pick me and Anthony up from Wasaga, even though the whole time we drove you crazy; when I got older, asking me how many boyfriends I had and telling me that any man who dare love me better be careful. Even though we’ve always been far, you were always there. Even now, you’ll always be here with me. In memories, in your stories that live on, in the few Italian curse words I learned from you and use on the regular. I love you so much papa. I am so blessed to be a part of this family, even when it hurts being so far away. You have truly taught and shown me what family means.

Love you always,
Vitto

P.s. I found a man (just the one) and I really think you’d have loved him. He sends his love as well.

Papa... it’s been tough for me to figure out what to say and sometimes I find it’s even more difficult to put such amazing memories into words, but I will try. From the first day that I met you, when Nick brought me to your home for dinner, I knew you and Nonni were both amazing people. You took the time to get to know me. You asked me about myself because you actually cared. You’d ask about my family, what part of Italy my family is from and I honestly felt an instant connection from those very moments.
You made me laugh from day one. Your endless stories that I would look forward to hearing every time we came over. It’s funny because you always had a new story to share. Happy stories, sad stories, and everything in between, but there was always something new to learn.
The way you looked at Nonni, with unconditional love, is something I’ve always valued. The way you’d make her laugh, the way you’d be the first one up to get her whatever she needed, you always made sure she was okay and the way you treated her is something I will always cherish. You showed us what true love really is.
I remember when I didn’t have my licence yet and I’d take the bus to see Nick when he still worked at Starbucks. One day I didn’t notice you in the parking lot, waiting to pick him up. You called me over to come wait in your car with you. You made me laugh... telling me stories about when Nick was young and all the silly things he used to do. I will never forget those moments.
You always talked about our wedding day. I am beyond thankful you shared our special day with us. One thing I’ve realized is that I didn’t wait until after our wedding to call both you and Nonni by β€œNonni and Papa”. I called you Papa for many years before that. You made it so comfortable for me, that it came naturally- and that means the world to me. I know everyone says β€œat first it feels funny to call your in-laws by mom and dad” but never with you. I genuinely thank you for that.
Thank you for helping to raise Nick into the man he is today. He wouldn’t be him, without you, and there is no way to thank you for that. I will always remember you Papa and I love you.

Thank you, Dad, for answering my prayer when I was six years old... Mom, I want to have a daddy, too. You married Mom because you loved her but also because you loved me.

Growing up, I didn't hear "I love you" but I felt it. In the years before you got sick, you finally expressed yourself. How beautiful it was to hear "I love you", even though it was usually accompanied by your endless teasing.

In the last two years, it was so hard for all of us to see you suffer inside and out. It was so sad to see that you didn't understand what was happening to you. But the joking and teasing and Barese gestures never ended. We knew that part of you still lived and we found some comfort in that.

Thank you, Dad for cherishing all of us every day of our lives. Even in your final, trying days, you constantly asked for "the kids".Β  They will always remember your warm, neck cuddles. I will always remember that you answered my prayer. I will love you forever, Dad.
Antoinette

My dear sweet Papa:
This is not easy for me. This doesn’t seem real. But right now all I can think of is how much I appreciate you.
Thank you for always making me feel loved and hopeful even during the toughest times. You never judged and always opened your arms to me and my family. You taught me the importance of connectedness, family, inclusivity and laughter.
I remember, as a young child, always looking forward to visiting my grandparents on the weekends- watching you devour Nonni’s homemade tomatoe sauce and pasta.
These memories carried forward to when I had my own children and your deep deep love for them. Seeing you play with them and cuddle with them melted my heart. We were so fortunate to have them experience what it was like to have great grandparents. They too looked forward to seeing Nonni and papa on weekends, often asking β€œCan we go see Nonni and Papa today?” You always made sure they were well fed and as you were sitting across the table, eating, you would stop and say loudly, to Sienna β€œHow many sweethearts do you have now?”
I remember the smell of your cologne and how you never wore jeans- always dressed to impress. Your neatly combed hair and well shaven face. Your warm hugs and tight handshake. Your endless number of suits in your closet and your favourite hats.
We were your world, the kids meant everything to you. And I wish we all had more time together.
Please stay close to us always.
I will think of you everyday.
Love always and forever,
Amanda

Dear Papa,

You’ve touched so many lives and brought a smile to all our faces. I want to express my gratitude and love as I embark on this journey of celebrating your life, grieving, healing and remembering you. You will always be in my heart.

Papa, as your first grandchild you imprinted on me many teachings and gems of wisdom throughout my 39 years. Most of all, you modeled some of the best qualities and values any human being can have: love, family, loyalty, integrity, work ethic, belonging and resilience. I feel very blessed to have had the gift of experiencing life with you.

Papa, you were a lively storyteller. All your wisdom came through stories. Stories of your work experiences (and how everyone called you Papa); stories of your childhood (you supported your family from a young age); and of your experience parenting Mom and Uncle Frankie (you waved a few β€˜schiaffoni’ here and there until they were adults). There was always a healthy dose of humour, which we all loved.

We loved hearing you share stories of when you met Nonni and her beautiful daughter Antoinette (my Mom) whom you loved as your own daughter from day one. You would talk about how much you loved Nonni’s family and how much our late Nonno and Sho Sho welcomed you into their lives. You would remember bringing Uncle Frankie to many hockey practices. You were so proud of your children, grandchildren and great-children. You went for walks around the block, meeting new neighbours, while carrying me on your shoulders. I wish I could have carried you on my shoulders, dear Papa. I wish I could have taken away all your suffering.

What brings me strength is remembering your fierce desire to make everyone around you feel like they belonged. From the moment guests walked in the door, you would offer a drink, put your arm around them and make them feel like family. There were no β€œus” and β€œthem” for you, Papa. You accepted everyone no matter what they looked like or where they came from. What you valued was a person’s character. You saw the commonalities among people, and respected their differences.
Everyone called you Papa – not only your grandchildren – your work colleagues, nurses and caregivers. You were our hero, who genuinely opened your arms to all. You knew early on in your life what abandonment felt like and you worked so hard to ensure that no one around you ever felt like you once did.

You brought a spirit of generosity everywhere you went, dear Papa. You were generous with your love, your time, your talent, your gifts (and always reminded Nonni to give the kids some money for their piggy banks!) You went out of your way to give and you had a magnetic energy - you loved making jokes and creating an environment where everyone wanted to be around you. Your grandchildren and great-grandchildren were everything to you and we adored you, dear Papa. You loved being close, giving us kisses and hugs and always made us feel loved. Even during the pandemic with all the restrictions, you would lean in to kiss Felicia on the forehead!

You never gave up, Papa. Even on our last Zoom call with you on New Year’s Day, you told us not to worry, that you were ok, that you were coming home. You are resting now, dear Papa. God is watching over you. And your memory will always live on in our hearts. We love you so much.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Carella family as they/we mourn the passing of this fine man. Nicola was an exceptional person in all aspects of his life. Of the many things for which he will be remembered is his great love and devotion to his family. Even for those of us who were family as friends, we were always made to be most welcome in his home. There is nothing that this man would not do for anyone. No matter the challenges in life, he faced them and taught us to do so with a smile and faith in the Creator. May he rest in peace. Remembered and cherished always.
Dad, I love you with all my heart. I was blessed to have you as a father, friend and mentor. You were an amazing dad with an amazing heart. You made me who I am today. You lead by example, good or bad, right or wrong, always with the best of intentions, always with a good heart. You were my hero, my idol. You taught me to never give up and to be the best that I could be. I was so proud to be your son and I will cherish every memory. I miss you more than you can imagine. Heaven is so lucky to have you. I wish I could see see the angels laughing when you teach them Carnarese. I love you!
