Nicholas's obituary
He is survived by his parents Anthony and Markay Plastino, siblings Tony, Krystine, Markay, Gayle, and Sam, ex-wife and friend Soni and their two children, Nicole and Sam Plastino, and an abundance of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his siblings Francis, Fatima Al-Tamimi (nee Leta Jane “LeeJae” Plastino), and Andrew Plastino, and his beloved Akita Hoss E. Boy.
Nick was born on November 4, 1959 in Spokane, WA, and grew up in Tacoma, WA. He attended Hunt Junior High and graduated from Wilson High School. He served in the United States Coast Guard from 1978 to 1984 and traveled the world as an engineer aboard the USCGC Polar Sea, the “Wandering Arctic Garbage Barge”. During his service he was awarded the Arctic Service Medal, Antarctic Service Medal, and numerous marksman awards and commendations.
Nick and Soni (nee Hopson) were wed in a small ceremony under the Narrows Bridge on August 20th, 1983. Shortly afterward they relocated to Alaska (via 1969 Camaro along the Yukon Pass). While their marriage ended on September 28th, 1991, they remained friends.
Nick spent most of his adult life on the Kenai Peninsula. He lived in Funny River, Kenai, Kasilof, Soldotna, and Sterling and enjoyed spending summers on the Homer Spit. After his children were grown, he moved to Anchorage, AK where he owned and operated a successful insulation company. During his time in Alaska he made many friends who became family to him
Nick was an artist, musician, and creator who remained community-minded throughout his life. He counted being a parent as one of his greatest achievements.
Nicholas’ Celebration of Life will take place at a family friend’s home on January 5, 2020 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
