Newell's obituary

Newell S. Habermacher

Born October 16, 1930 in Del Rio, Texas – died August 21, 2020 in Bakersfield, California

Newell Habermacher, much loved son, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, died peacefully on August 21 in Bakersfield, surrounded by his loving family. Newell left this world with his boots on and wearing his favorite cowboy shirt.

Newell was a great man who worked and played hard his whole life. Despite being afflicted with polio at an early age, he embraced life with tremendous enthusiasm and gusto. He loved riding motorcycles and building flat-bottom boat engines, even winning awards for building the fastest engine.

A man of few words, Newell was respected and loved by his family and by everyone who took the time to know him. He loved his pets, and he always had cats and dogs, including his favorite dog, “Brownie,” and his beautiful cat, “Nala.”

Newell was the youngest of three children of Della (Stitz) and Steven Andrew Habermacher, both deceased. He is also predeceased by his siblings, Roberta (“Bobby”) Gertrude Habermacher, and Steven (“Brother”) Richard Habermacher. He is survived by his sister Myla Benton; his two children, Margene Lee Habermacher, and son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Vanny Habermacher; and his granddaughter (Steve’s daughter), Rebecca Denise Habermacher Scott.

Newell is remembered fondly by many, including his daughter, Margene: “He was my mountain. He had a big, warm heart and a wicked sense of humor, and he was always there for the people he cared about, always willing to help someone in need. As my brother put it, ‘he set a high bar.’ He had great energy, and even though he’d had polio as a boy, it barely slowed him down. He loved speed and excitement and fun, but he worked hard, too, and he always took care of business.” His niece, Shari Carlson, remembers Newell as “the best part of my childhood. I remember hearing his motorcycle coming down the street to visit us, and he always made me so happy.”

Newell spent his final years living in Bakersfield, near his son Steve, where he made many new friends and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the SPCA in Newell’s name are welcome.
