Nerissa was born on April 24, 1968 in Surigao City, Philippines and immigrated to the United States in 1979 with her mother and siblings. She graduated from Central High School in Omaha, Nebraska and attended both the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
