Nancy's obituary

Obituary for Nancy Lee Witzel

February 12th, 1938 - December 12th, 2023

The family of Nancy Lee Witzel (née Von Bussenius) sadly announces the peaceful passing of their beloved Nancy, their dearest Mugga, on Tuesday, December 12th, 2023 in Baltimore, MD at the age of 85. Nancy was born and raised in Baltimore. After 55 years in nursing, raising two children, and celebrating the births of eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, she retired to Augsburg Lutheran Village in 2013. She is survived by: her brother Vaughn W. Von Bussenius, her daughter Andrea R. Campbell and her husband Bruce Campbell, their children Paul Campbell, Aodan Campbell, Emma Campbell, Etain Campbell, and Graham Campbell, her son Joel L. Witzel and his wife Marty Witzel, their children Madeline Schulle and her husband Bryan Schulle, Helena Witzel, and Marcus Witzel and his spouse Rachel Witzel, and Madeline's children Elinor Schulle and Oliver Schulle. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Leonard Witzel Jr., who passed away in 1994.

Nancy’s family was her pride and joy. She always looked forward to spending time with them and making memories. She took incredible pride in being the only Mugga she had ever met, a name bestowed upon her by her first grandchild, Madeline. She shared a birthday with her first great-grandchild, Elinor, and was always delighted to be able to celebrate their birthday together. She is remembered fondly for her love of gardening and collecting beautiful things, especially antiques. An active mentor with Al Anon and through her career as a nurse educator, Nancy was a teacher at heart and loved to share her wisdom and her faith. Her Christian faith was foundational to her identity, and she spoke with God as a familiar friend. She was confident in her salvation and unshakeable in her faith and belief in the never-ending goodness of God.

All are welcome to a memorial service celebrating Nancy’s life and legacy on January 5th at 2pm at the Augsburg Lutheran Village Community Chapel followed by a private reception in the community room for friends and family. Nancy has chosen to donate her body to advance medical research. Her family is thankful for the opportunity for her to be able to continue to help others learn, even in death. In lieu of flowers, Nancy requested that donations be made to the Augsburg Resident’s Care Fund in her name.
