Nancy's obituary
Nancy Sue Havekost, 82, passed away peacefully early Monday, September 26, 2022, at her home overlooking Lake LBJ as was her wish. Nancy was born in Pampa, Texas to Joe and Eloise Vincent but grew up in Dumas, Texas with her older brother Joe Wiley.
Nancy graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in history and went on to earn a Master’s in English Literature from the University of Texas at El Paso. Although she graduated from Texas Tech, her husband Roger and daughter Amy successfully converted her into an avid Texas Longhorns football fan.
Nancy taught history and English at Irvin High School in El Paso, Texas where she also coached Academic Decathlon teams to state level competition several years in a row. She retired from teaching at Marshall High School in San Antonio. Nancy was an inspirational educator who had an impact on the lives of many of her students.
Nancy had diverse interests making her an excellent conversationalist. She was an artist who painted watercolor landscapes inspired by scenes throughout Texas as well as an avid reader across a wide variety of subjects. In retirement she split her time between two book clubs and her newfound passion for golf. Nancy was also a huge history buff. Her family often joked they couldn’t let her and her daughter Amy near a history museum or landmark for fear of never seeing either again! Roger and Rebecca benefitted never having to read a museum placard or historical marker. Just ask Mom!
Nancy was active in the Marble Falls, TX chapter of PEO, a philanthropic organization that provides educational support for women. Nancy served on the scholarship committee and worked hard to provide opportunities for women in the community.
Nancy did not wish to have formal funeral services. Her family will hold a private celebration of her life. We selected charities that reflect her interests if you wish to make a donation in her memory.
She is survived by her husband Roger, daughters Amy and Rebecca, son in law John and her 5-year-old granddaughter Ellie. Nancy was an amazing wife, mother, Nana, teacher and friend. Her love, friendship and support leaves a hole that cannot be filled, but we are all blessed to have had her as part of our lives.
Because I Could Not Stop for Death - Emily Dickinson
Because I could not stop for Death—
He kindly stopped for me—
The Carriage held but just Ourselves—
And Immortality.
We slowly drove—He knew no haste
And I had put away
My labor and my leisure too,
For His Civility—
We passed the School, where Children strove
At Recess—in the Ring—
We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain—
We passed the Setting Sun—
Or rather—He passed us—
The Dews drew quivering and chill—
For only Gossamer, my Gown—
My Tippet—only Tulle—
We paused before a House that seemed
A Swelling of the Ground—
The Roof was scarcely visible—
The Cornice—in the Ground—
Since then—’tis Centuries—and yet
Feels shorter than the Day
I first surmised the Horses’ Heads
Were toward Eternity—
