Nancy's obituary

Nancy Stivers Rowland, 72, passed away peacefully at her home in Aldie, Virginia with her husband at her side on Sunday, November 21, 2021. She led a purposeful life, devoted to her family, friends, and anyone in need. She was born in March 1949 and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. She attended the University of Tennessee, where she earned a degree in speech pathology. She met her future husband, Lloyd Rowland, on a blind date in Memphis, and they were married almost 50 years ago in December 1971. Together they traveled the world, shared love and adventures, and raised two sons, Lloyd and Ben.

Nancy was strong in her Christian faith and was an active member of her church. She dedicated her life to educating and serving others. She was proud to be an educator of young children. Nancy was passionate about mission work locally in Virginia and internationally. She was particularly passionate about feeding people who are homeless and those who are less fortunate. She cared deeply about social justice. She was empathetic and compassionate, and she cared more for others than she did for herself--including at the end of her life. When she entered cancer treatment trials that she knew probably would not be able to help her, she was comforted that the data from those trials would help women years from now. She embodied grace--grace for others and grace for herself.

She is predeceased by her parents, Robert Stivers Sr. and Virginia Thurston Stivers, and her brother, Robert Stivers Jr. She is survived by her husband, Lloyd Rowland; her sons, Lloyd and Ben Rowland; her daughters-in-law, Shannon and Tobi Rowland; and her five grandchildren, Baylee, Connor, Paige, Virginia, and Brooks.

Nancy's memorial service will be held at Centreville United Methodist Church in Centreville, VA on Friday, December 10th at 10 am, and all are welcome. Her service will also be streamed live by the church for those unable to attend in person. To keep everyone safe and healthy, there will be no visitation with Nancy's family before or after the service. Nancy's family is grateful for your love and support.

In lieu of flowers, Nancy's family would love it if people made donations in her memory to two charities that were very important to her:
