Nancy's obituary

Nancy Louise Gauer Boczon, age 86, passed away in the early hours of February 15, 2022. She was born on May 7, 1935 in Elizabeth, NJ to Charles Edward Gauer and Mildred Sullivan Gauer. She grew up in Linden, NJ and spent many summers at the NJ shore with her parents and siblings, where her love of the sun, sand and ocean air began. Nancy graduated from Linden High School and later attended Washington School for Secretaries in New York City.

Marrying in 1955, Nancy settled down in Fanwood, NJ, where she became a loving mother of three. Having much interest in fashion and style, Nancy held many positions throughout her working years with the retail chain, ‘Hahne and Company’ in New Jersey. Nancy began as a salesperson at the Westfield location of Hahne’s, became a buyer at their Newark location, and ultimately played an instrumental role in opening the Woodbridge Mall store, where she then became floor supervisor. Her roles in her retail career allowed her to realize her tenacity for growth and achievement and put those traits to use as a headhunter for an employment agency, Pomerantz Personnel where she helped others find their path to success. Recently, many friends of Nancy’s daughter reminisced about the various summer jobs Nancy had acquired for them during their high school years.

Upon her retirement, Nancy relocated to Briny Breezes, FL, a coastal community where she could once again enjoy the salt air and sunshine. Nancy was an active volunteer in her community from day one. She became the anchor for the local television station, the BBC, where she interviewed countless individuals and local businesses to introduce and encourage involvement within the Briny community. She was most proud of her volunteer work as town clerk where her role was an integral part of the Briny Breezes government and community. She performed her statutory responsibilities with confidence, an infectious smile and indubitably, a witty remark or two that brought light to many town council meetings. Nancy was also involved in Briny’s theater, choral groups, and church choir; all areas that allowed her vibrant personality to shine.

Nancy was her best self when she was entertaining or surrounded by family and friends. While preparing meals may not have been her specialty, she was always prepared to offer a glass of wine, a good laugh or to discuss anything and everything about cats to anyone around. Her love of animals led her to breed and raise a litter of golden retrievers in her younger years, but anyone who knew Nancy, knew cats were her favorite. Her most recent cats, Mako and Minnow, will miss her company at nap time.

Nancy is survived by her daughter, Donna Boczon Talis of Flemington, NJ, and sons, Joel Edward (wife Joann) Boczon of Somerset, NJ, and Matthew Charles Boczon of Bethlehem, PA; her five grandchildren who called her Nana; Kelsey Elizabeth Talis (Wilmington, NC), Emma Joan Talis (Mt. Sinai, NY), Charlotte Rose Talis (Wilmington, DE), Samantha Angeline Boczon (Wayne, NJ) and Charles Ruggiero (Marley Buffett) Boczon (Bethlehem, PA). She is also survived by her sister June Rose Kaiser (Cranford, NJ) and sister-in-law, Joan Gauer (Briny Breezes, FL). Nancy is preceded in death by her brother, Carl Francis Gauer, brother-in-law Fred Kaiser, and her parents.

An important wish of Nancy’s was to have her body donated to science upon her passing, to be used as a teaching tool to do some good in the world. She felt strongly that when she passed, she would no longer be present in her physical body, and that her spirit was free to live on within the hearts and minds of her loved ones.

Nancy will best be remembered for her witty sense of humor, and always telling her grandchildren to be bold and confident. Nancy’s grandchildren recount her mantra as “Here I am, you lucky people!” a phrase she would often remind them to repeat to themselves upon entering a room. We are confident that is exactly what she said when entering through the pearly gates. A memorial service will be planned in the future. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Zion Lutheran Church, 56 Old Turnpike Rd, Oldwick, NJ 08858.
