Nahusenay's obituary

Nahusenay Gerima

March 14, 1965 – September 25, 2024

Nahusenay Gerima, the ninth of ten siblings, was born on March 14, 1965, in Gondar, Ethiopia, to Mulunesh Baslious and Gerima Tafere. He passed away on September 25, 2024, in Potomac, Maryland, surrounded by his loving family. Though his journey took him far from home, the love and care he showed for his family never wavered. At the age of 19, Nahusenay left Ethiopia, beginning a journey that would lead him through Burkina Faso, Italy, and eventually to Canada, all driven by immigrant-related challenges. In Canada, he worked for some time before finally reuniting with his family in Maryland.

Nahusenay, affectionately known as a beloved uncle, had a larger-than-life personality. His charisma and attentiveness made him one of the most caring people you could ever know. He was a man who would take the shirt off his back to help others, and his protective nature ensured that no one he loved ever faced hardships alone. As a manager at a local movie theater, Nahusenay became a hero to his nieces and nephews, offering them their first jobs and an endless supply of movie passes. His love for comedy was infectious, and he could light up any room with his boisterous, joyful presence.

Despite his tough exterior, Nahusenay had an incredible sensitivity. His natural intuition often led him to warn his family members about questionable friendships or relationships, and more often than not, he was right. His sixth sense, combined with his gentle, nonjudgmental heart, made him someone you could talk to about anything. Whether it was offering advice or simply listening, Nahusenay was always there—grounded, fearless, and compassionate.

A lover of animals and a fan of Bob Marley, Nahusenay aligned his life with values of peace, love, and understanding. He was a fighter for those he cared about, never letting anyone he loved face adversity alone. His strength came not just from his fierce protection but also from his deep understanding of how easily feelings can be hurt. This sensitivity, combined with his grounded nature, made him someone who was both strong and incredibly kind.

Nahusenay is survived by his loving siblings and family, who will cherish his memory forever. His legacy of care, humor, and unconditional love will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
