Nahu was an incredible uncle with a big personality and a laugh reminiscent of Santa Claus – deep, hearty, and full of joy. He was the one who got me my first job at a movie theater in Georgetown, and that summer remains one of the most memorable times of my life. Even though I was an employee, I felt like the owner’s daughter, treated with fierce protectiveness, care, and kindness. Nahu always checked in on me, making sure I was doing well and feeling supported. He constantly encouraged me, telling me I was destined to do big things, which meant a great deal to me back then. When the movies would start, he’d suggest I explore Georgetown, handing me a stack of movie passes to share with any new friends. Naturally, I befriended the Ben & Jerry’s workers, creating a barter system – ice cream in exchange for movie passes. He’d tell me to enjoy anything I wanted at the theater, leading to an overload of popcorn and candy. I could walk into any movie whenever I pleased. Over the years, whenever we’d gather, Nahu would approach with his signature swagger, leaning in to ask how I was and laughing deeply as I shared. He’d always say, in his deep voice, “No one better be hurting my niece’s feelings.” It’s easy to take those moments for granted, but now I realize how special they truly were. Though it's difficult to accept that I won’t hear his laugh again, I’m deeply grateful for the memories we shared, which I will cherish forever.
