Daniel's obituary
Daniel (Dan) Woods passed away peacefully on June 8th, 2023, with family in prayer around him.
Dan was proud of his South Carolinian roots, born on July 16th, 1943, in Lane, South Carolina, to Jerry Woods, Sr. and Susan Felder Woods. He grew up in rural Williamsburg County with his sister and three brothers amongst a close-knit family of aunts, uncles, and cousins.
After graduating high school, he served in the United States Army and was part of the 82nd Airborne Infantry.
After an honorable discharge from the Army, he moved “up North” to Philadelphia to follow in the footsteps of other family members who had previously migrated there for work and new opportunities. He began his career as a Tool Planner for Westinghouse after studying at Temple University in Mechanical Technology. He later studied Business at Cheyney University.
He built roots in Philadelphia after marrying Evelyn Mims Woods, his wife of over 44 years (married August 3rd, 1968). In 1975, the couple relocated to Upper Chichester, PA, when their only daughter Veronica was a toddler.
For more than four decades, Dan was a respected leader in the Upper Chichester and Chester, PA, communities. For most of that time, he was an integral part of Asbury (now Murphy Asbury) AME Church in Chester, PA, participating in various ministries, including the Men's choir, president of the Lay organization, and as a trustee. Outside of church, he also was President of the Twin Oak Farms Civic Association, a member of the Chester Rotary Club, and on the Board of Directors for Delaware County Library.
One of his proudest community accomplishments was the creation of the Men’s Fellowship Breakfast Forum in 2003. The scripture “as iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend (Proverbs 27:17 NKJV)” best summarizes the forum. Members of the group met at various diners around Chester to engage in conversation about politics, religion, and community hot topics.
Dan was the consummate servant leader who always lifted while he climbed. He launched Daniel Woods Real Estate Company in 1987 in Chester, PA. As the broker/owner of the company, he assisted not only many new investors and first-time home buyers in real estate but also mentored numerous small business owners to get ahead through wise counsel, introductions, or hiring them for work. He was a member of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (the advocacy organization for African American real estate professionals) and the Chester Business Association.
Dan loved his lodge brothers like family. He was raised in the Prince Hall J.C. Price Lodge #82 on June 28, 1970, where he served as Most Worshipful Master from 1976-1977.
He will forever be known as a devoted father and husband. He poured into his daughter Veronica all that he had. He also courageously served as a caregiver to Evelyn for over ten years while she battled a serious illness.
Others preceding him in sleep include his wife, Evelyn Mims Woods, and his brothers Jerry Woods, Jr, Lee Woods, and George Woods.
He leaves many to cherish his fond memories, including his daughter, Veronica Woods of Lansdowne, PA; a sister, Hattie Emma (Thomas) Plowden of Lane, SC; two sister-in-laws, Phyllis Woods of Florence, SC and Gail Bunting of Philadelphia, PA; and a host of Cousins, Nephews, Nieces, and dear friends.
