About Sandy

We moved to Bronx, New York on Garden Street in 1965. Morton was about 11 years old. He became well known very quickly in the neighborhood. Morton had many names, his grandmother gave him the name, β€œSandy”, because when he was born, his hair was a sandy color. Morton was a born Leader. He took charge of Garden Street. No one would dare mess with anyone in his family from the fear of him, who at that time he went by the name Priest! If anyone did anything to offend him or his family or anyone that he liked, they would have to answer to him, and he became very intimidating.

On the other hand…He was such a loving young man, and was loved by many. When people told us how nice he was, we didn’t believe they were talking about the same person. At home he would act like a drill sergeant. Make my brothers do pushups, make them hold an object straight out until they were trembling, and things of that nature. He was obsessed with Bruce Lee, he often imitated him. He really loved karate. My oldest sister Pat had just fixed her hair and he would mess it up and run…that would start a fight between them. But when he went outside he had great manners, knew how to be respectful, the girls were all over him! He was also very clean, and would clean a whole house himself.

Anyone who knew him got to see how funny he was. People who would not normally laugh, would laugh so hard their stomach would hurt! That’s Sandy!
