Mohinder's obituary
Mohinder Kaur Dhillon was born in Kisumu, Kenya, and raised with two brothers and three sisters by Chattar Singh Grewal and Ind Kaur.
Her father was transferred to Mombasa, where the family was raised in a loving home, where education was highly valued.
Mohinder was an avid netball & hockey player and very active in the Girl Scouts.
She went on to become an educator and taught at various primary schools in Mombasa.
She stayed in touch with many of her students who remembered her passionate teaching skills.
She met the love of her life, Dr. Shamsher Singh Dhillon, in 1957, when he spotted her at a
Girl Guide meeting, which was the beginning to a beautiful love story, one for the ages, that would span 64 years. After they wed in 1958, they embarked on creating a lasting legacy of love and respect.
Mohinder joined Dr. Dhillon’s medical practice to support him and was the backbone of his professional and political career and supported him fiercely as he campaigned and later won the elections to become the Deputy Mayor of Mombasa.
They became actively involved in society, and were loyal members of the Lions Club International, the Mombasa Sports Club, and the Mombasa Club, to name a few.
Mohinder was known for speaking her mind, being bold and forthright, and delivered memorable speeches at various events. Together, they offered numerous pro bono medical services to many, near and far.
In the 1970's, Mohinder’s entrepreneurial spirit blossomed when she opened a well-known boutique, Sonya Arts, in Mombasa.
Mohinder was Shamsher’s right hand, and he was her heartbeat.
They were blessed with three children, Savraj, Rennu and Ashiana, and invested all their time
in their education and success. Mohinder traveled all over the world to visit their children
during their schooling and even after they all got married and moved to different continents.
Then, their grandchildren, Shana, Sheena, Sean, Justin, Troy and Jaydn became their pride and joy.
Mohinder was known for her passion for maintaining an impeccable home and her hospitality.
She had an eye for beauty and was quite talented in creating beautiful flower arrangements,
having trained at the prestigious Moyses Steven’s school of floristry in the UK.
As a Lioness and on behalf of the Kenya Medical Association, as well as for various other
organization and initiatives, together Dr. and Mrs. Dhillon hosted beautiful dinner parties
and her famous tea invites to chai and samosas were enjoyed by many.
Mohinder and Shamsher spent their final years enjoying retirement at their dream home,
at Greenwood Drive, Nyali.
After losing Dr. Dhillon in September 2022, Mohinder’s broken heart would never be the same.
As heartbroken as we are, we are grateful that both our parents lived a life of community service and will be remembered for years to come.
The era of Dr. and Mrs. Dhillon will live in our hearts forever.
Their community service and will be remembered for years to come.
