Mitchell's obituary
Mitchell M. Turner, 56, of Decatur, GA peacefully passed away on February 9, 2023, after a brief illness.
Mitchell was born in Gainesville, Georgia. Growing up as an Army brat, he lived in several U.S. states as well as Germany and Belgium. After Mitchell graduated from high school in Highland Falls, New York, he attended Georgia Southern College where he earned a degree in communications, pursued his passion for music, played in rock bands, and met the love of his life. He went on to earn a master’s degree and a Doctor of Philosophy in music theory and composition from the University of Georgia. This led to a rewarding, twenty-year career as an accomplished Professor of Music at LaGrange College. Mitchell was a natural-born educator who mentored countless students encouraging them to pursue their own creative talents and academic interests. When he wasn't teaching, Mitchell would spend his free time playing guitar, composing electronic music, performing with friends, watching soccer, and traveling the world with his wife. He was loved by many for his sharp wit, dry humor, creative intelligence, and unflinching loyalty.
Mitchell is survived by his wife, Janet B. Turner; stepfather, Robert G. Tames; brother, Paul “Lee” Turner IV; stepsister, Lisa Tames Gangai; uncle, Stephen Turner; aunt, Cindy Howell; two nieces; cousins and many dear friends and colleagues. He was predeceased by his father, Paul Lee Turner III; mother, Beverly Tames; and sister, Amy Turner.
His family will hold a memorial service to celebrate his life on Saturday, March 25th, 2023, from 4:00-5:30 p.m. at The Chapel on Sycamore, 318 Sycamore Street, Decatur, GA 30030.
