Misty's obituary

Misty Renee Gresham, 51, of Aiken, South Carolina, passed away on the morning of February 14, 2022 after a combination of pre-existing health issues, paired with a month-long battle with a respiratory infection, which ultimately led to cardiac arrest.

Misty was born on October 29, 1970 in LeGrange, Georgia–an only child to Jack & Sheila Gresham. After, the family relocated multiple times, spending significant time in Michigan, South Carolina, and Florida. Misty attended South Aiken High School, in Aiken, South Carolina, where she graduated from and began building her foundation as a young adult.

It was during this time she met Tony Sullivan, with whom she conceived her first child, Michael. She ended up moving to Florida with her parents for about a year, gave birth, before deciding to return back to Aiken, to embark on her journey to forge her own life path.

This was a central theme with Misty, who was regarded as being extraordinarily vibrant, warm, friendly, daring, gutsy, resilient, refreshingly authentic, loving, and fiercely protective of her loved ones.

Shortly after returning, she fell in love with and began a long-term relationship with Willie Mathis Jr, and over the next two decades gave birth to her “own little kingdom”—as she called it—Lauren, Victoria, Tre, Quinten, Kyerra, Jacquelynn & Khalia.

Her children were always her sole focus, and she took care of them until the end, oftentimes to the exclusion of her own needs. Being an only child, she always said she wanted a lot of children so none of them would ever feel as alone as she did, and so she could always be surrounded by love. Also, she believed in the power of having a tribe, since she had no siblings and her family lived in other states. So, she collected many friends over the years, and collectively, they all took care of each other, along with each other’s children.

Over the years, Misty worked in different professions—from being a social worker, working many other jobs in between, to her last position as becoming a head supervisor for a prominent security guard company in the CSRA. She worked in this position for many years before limitations caused by her declining physical health provoked her to step down.

Often, she spoke on being highly interested in maybe one day becoming a psychologist or therapist to connect with and help others; It’s akin to the support she naturally extended to everyone around her.

Misty spent her remaining years heavily supporting her children’s endeavors, showing up for her closest friends, traveling, spending time with her grandchildren, and was actively working on plans to relocate, to get a new leash on life, now that all of her children are grown.

For the last 14+ years, she was in a deeply committed and loving union with Eugene James. She is survived by both her parents, her aunts and uncles, Bonnie and Joe Watson, Galen and Kathy Wrape, many cousins, all her children, and nine grandchildren.

A ‘Celebration of Life’ gathering will be held at the Graniteville Recreational Center, located at 917 Jefferson Davis Hwy, Graniteville, SC 29829 on Sunday, February 27, 2022 from 4 PM to 8 PM.
