Misae's obituary
Misae Sugiura Soto, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2025, at the age of 94. Born in Tokyo, Japan, on November 1, 1930, Misae was the daughter of Choko and Katsura Sugiura. She was one of eight siblings and lived a remarkable life filled with love, resilience, and a deep dedication to family.
In her early years, Misae was a childhood actress in Japan before World War II. It was in Japan that she met and married Eugene Alfonso Soto. She later moved to the United States with him. Together, they built a family and shared many memories before going their separate ways.
Misae had a gift for bringing people together, often through her love of cooking. Whether she was preparing meals for family and friends or sewing beautiful clothing, her care and creativity were always evident. She found joy in making dresses for Japanese dolls, writing in Japanese calligraphy, and cheering on her favorite sports teams. She also had a passion for stamp collecting, a hobby that stemmed from the time she spent working alongside her father in the post office.
Throughout her life, Misae worked hard to provide for her family. She spent time as a waitress before becoming a dedicated realtor, helping many Japanese clients find their homes in the U.S. After retirement, she moved to Arizona to be with her daughter, Rachel, where she played a cherished role in raising her great-great-granddaughter, Brooklynn Sugiura Embry.
Misae is survived by her sons, Kenneth Eugene Soto and Theodore Soto; her daughter, Rachel Sullivan; her sisters, Yoko Yamada and Miwako Inageki; 11 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 9 great-great-grandchildren. Her love, wisdom, and kindness will forever be remembered by those who knew her.
Misae’s life was one of strength, devotion, and deep love for her family. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy that will live on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.
