Milt's obituary
Milton Pickman, a true embodiment of "The Greatest Generation" and of a Life Well-Lived, passed away on April 26, 2025, in San Francisco at the age of 98.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Milt grew up helping his first-generation parents, Anna (née Spool) and Barnett, in their Park Slope candy store during the Great Depression. His early summers were spent in a small bungalow in Sound Beach, Long Island, along with many cousins from the Spool side of the family.
Milt honorably served in the U.S. Army at the close of World War II. Before shipping out to Europe, he enjoyed a weekend pass in Brooklyn and met the love of his life, Selma June (Sle) Boyarsky. They were married on March 15th, 1947. For an incredible 77 years, Milt and Sle built a life together, raising a family and moving from the vibrant streets of Brooklyn to the suburbs in New Jersey, then to Manhattan, and across the country to the serene landscapes of Marin County, and finally to downtown San Francisco before Sle's passing in January, 2025. Everyone who met them knew them to be “True New Yorkers”.
Milt was a man of ambition and diverse interests. After earning his business degree from Pace University, he embarked on a distinguished career in accounting, following the astute advice of father-in-law Julius. His professional journey began at the renowned New York firm Anchin, Block and Anchin, then a foray into commercial real estate, and even the spirited ownership of a bar and grill called Needle and Thread in lower Manhattan. His stint as a bartender, though short-lived, showcased his vibrant personality. Returning to Anchin, Milt's dedication and intellect shone brightly; he achieved the remarkable feat of placing second in the entire state on the 1967 New York State CPA Exam. As a partner, he became a respected authority in taxes and estate planning, a familiar face on the Financial News Network.
Upon retiring from Anchin in 1996, Milt moved to California to be closer to his beloved grandchildren. He leaves behind his devoted children, Michael (and wife Renie), Donna (and husband Thomas), his cherished grandchildren, Brennan and Julianna, nephew Steven (and wife Nora), and his late brother Hal, sister-in-law Elaine (and husband Marty), niece Laura, and many Spool relatives including 101-year-old first cousin Danny.
Milt lived a rich life, full of joy. He loved exploring new restaurants, visiting museums, enjoying theater, entertaining friends and clients, and embarking on frequent travels to Europe, Maui, and New York City, annually reuniting with his Anchin colleagues. His outgoing, friendly nature and loving spirit made every experience memorable. Pop Milt, as he was named by his grandchildren, will be dearly missed by all who had the good fortune to share his laughter, wisdom, heartfelt toasts, and boundless affection.
