I met Millie as a student in my history class. She said she always wanted to work in education but bartending paid well. A year later in 2014, the non profit I was working at had an opening so I encouraged her to apply. That began a 6 year friendship.
Mille was loyal, passionate, and, again, fearless. There is no one with a bigger heart. She loved animals. She always wanted to rescue a big shelter dog because “shelter dogs love you more”. She was so excited to see Dr. Jane Goodall in person she could not sleep. (And I received a text of so many consecutive OMGs it filled the entire screen.).
She always strived to learn or in her words “to become more educated daily”, both formally and informally. Millie cried and said she had never been so proud of herself when she open the envelope that had her degree from Mountain View. But she also learned from people and their stories. She wanted to sit down with a holocaust survivor and listen.
She never hesitated to ask questions, laughed at any chance given, and loved with all she had. Right now my heart is heavy with sorrow for all those who loved her, but I know, in time, I will feel sorry for those who never had the chance to see her light shine.
