Mildred's obituary

Mildred L. Eccles departed this world and made her transition into God’s arms on Saturday, August 29, 2020. Mildred was the first of four children from the union of Rev. Charles E. Wilson and Clara M. Boggs. She was born on May 16, 1943 in Marlinton, West Virginia. The family moved to Benton Harbor, Michigan and subsequently to Dowagiac, Michigan. Mildred was a 1962 graduate of Dowagiac Union High School in Dowagiac, Michigan. After high school, she pursued her interest in Cosmetology by attending Twin City Beauty College. She moved to Washington, DC, with her cousin Sallie Faye Stewart, to apply her skills in the Cosmetology industry. She eventually sought and gained employment with the United States Post Office in 1968 where she remained until her retirement in 2009. During her 41-year tenure, Mildred received awards, certificates of achievement and appreciation, including recognition from the former Capitol District Postmaster, Delores Killette for her contributions to the US Postal Service. All while returning to school and receiving her Real Estate License in 1984.
Mildred’s life was deeply rooted in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, with a history of membership and service at Union Memorial Church, Benton Harbor, MI, Conner A.M.E. Church, Dowagiac, MI, and Quinn Chapel A.M.E., in Cassopolis, MI. Most recently, Mildred was an active and dedicated member of Ward Memorial A.M.E Church, in Washington, DC, where she served in the J.C. McKinney Lay Organization, the Senior Usher Board and the Women’s Missionary Society. Mildred’s helping spirit extended beyond the church to people and organizations throughout the community, reaching all of the way to Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House where she worked until the unfortunate events of 9/11.
Mildred served on the Westhampton HOA Board (for her community) for decades. She worked diligently to keep her neighborhood functional, clean, and safe for all.
In 1981 Mildred met and married her soul mate of 39 years, George F. Eccles. From that union they had one child Kimberley Monique Eccles, born in 1982. Mildred’s nurturing spirit was also shared lovingly with her extended family, children David Eccles (Barbara) and Davisa Everett (Steven). She was preceded in death by her father, Rev. Charles E. Wilson (2001).
Mildred leaves to mourn her husband George Eccles, daughter Kimberley Eccles (Mikail), grandchildren Khloe, Mikayla, Sophia and Steve Jr., mother Clara Wilson of Southfield, MI, two brothers Kenneth Wilson (Teresa) of Southfield, MI, and Edgar Wilson (Diane) of Dunnelon, FL, two sisters Cheryl Coleman of Murrira, CA, and Doretha Ficklin of Upper Marlboro, MD, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, adopted children, friends, and co-workers. We will miss her laughter, holiday dinners, hosting get togethers, texts, Facebook messages, motherly presence, daily check-ins and propensity for having the last word 😊.
Mildred’s generous spirit and legacy will live on through her family and friends.
It was an Honor to know you. WE LOVE YOU ALWAYS AND FORVER!
