Michelle's obituary
Michelle, like many of us, had many nicknames throughout her life. Depending on the name she was called by was telling of one’s relationship with her. “Mish” was the last nickname many of her friends and colleagues affectionately called her and it was prominently “embroidered” on her bowling shirts.
She was born September 25, 1969, in Brooklyn, New York, to Georgia Howard and Calvin Freeman, who were later married. She was a proud Libra who collected her tribe of Libras and went as far as having the scales of justice tattooed on her arm. Balancing the scales of justice and fairness shaped her values and informed how she supervised at work. She would often say that she would not ask her staff to do anything she had not done or would not do from work activity to taking phone calls at work. She believed that setting an example starting with self was the effective and fair way to lead.
Michelle started working for the United States Postal Service in November 1988 as a “casual.” She spent several years at the JFK location as a mail handler before being accepted into the Associate Supervisors Program, which she successfully completed in March 2008. She was assigned to the Queens Processing and Distribution Center, where she became a valuable member of their management staff.
Michelle was an avid bowler and an active member of two bowling leagues -- Many Stylessssss Bowling and Static Shock. When she bowled she was known for personifying her comic alter ego, She-Hulk, which was imaged on her bowling shirts. When she wasn’t working or bowling with her teams you would find her practicing at her local alley in Ozone Park, Queens.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Georgia and Calvin Freeman; and her brother Michael A. Copeland.
