Michael's obituary

Michael Wren Hughes passed away peacefully on December 1st, 2023, in New Castle, Colorado. He will be missed tremendously by those that knew him.

Michael was born on April 1, 1973, in Haliburton, Ontario to Shirley and Wren Hughes. Michael attended Haliburton public school and college at Canadore College in North Bay, Ontario. In college, Michael was involved in campus sports, mainly hockey, and obtained a degree in business in 1992. Michael moved to Omaha, Ne in October of 1997 after meeting his wife, Kathy, on a now obsolete chat program called Powwow. Michael spent most of his working life at Hayneedle/Walmart. He was employed with Hayneedle for 20 years.

It took Michael about 2 years to find the local hockey club – Omaha Hockey Club and give his time and talents to them. He served numerous roles in the Omaha Hockey Club – from Vice President to Squirt/Peewee/Bantam Director to Director of Omaha Junior Lancers. The rink was his second home for many seasons. He served Omaha Hockey Club for 23 years until his health made him step down and retire. Michael was also a scout for the Thief River Falls Norskies and Head Scout/Social Media guy for the Kam River Fighting Walleye. He loved his hockey community. To know Mike was to love him—a humble and kind man who always gave his time and many talents to better others.

Michael and Kathy finally felt they were physically and mentally in a place to start "living" and doing things they had put on their bucket list since they no longer cared for Kathy's mom. They had just recently had their first Uber ride and attended their first NHL game together in St. Louis and had recently taken their first train ride to visit family in Colorado. He was looking forward to visiting family in Canada next year and spending some much-needed relaxation time away from home.

Michael is preceded in death by parents Wren and Shirley (Anderson) Hughes; mother-in-law Renate Kaspar and father-in-law Kenneth Kaspar; brother-in-law Dale Emmerson.

Survived by his wife of 25 years, Kathy; brother-in-law Kevin Kaspar; fur baby Toby; Sisters – Marie Emmerson, Judith (Ken) Robinson, Marilyn (Chuck) Tyner, Joanne (Kirk) Harrison, Tammy Stevenson; Brother Timothy (Kandy) Hughes; nieces Ava Schreck, Kaitlyn Maloley and Shaylee Maloley; numerous family and friends.

Celebration of life with a gathering of friends will be December 15 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Liberty First Credit Union Arena (7300 Q St, Ralston). Memorials to family.
