Mike's obituary
Michael Eugene Van Gundy, 64, of Prospect passed away on Sunday afternoon, December 17, 2023, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.
He was born January 11, 1959, in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin to Thomas and Marie (Merkle) Van Gundy and graduated from Buckeye Valley High School.
Mike always said that when he met his wife, “Our eyes met and our hearts touched,” and for 46 years they’ve stood side by side working every day to build a beautiful family full of love, generosity, and courage. He has taught his children to give everyone a chance or a million chances; that anything could be fixed and that everyone was worth it. Mike was an example of generosity: he could fix absolutely anything, and he would fix it for anyone without hesitation and expecting nothing in return. Most days he came in last so that others didn’t have to. He had a way of seeing exactly what you needed when you needed it.
Mike worked hard to build his Empire. He worked from the ground up at Empire Windows, and in 1997 became the owner. He taught everyone around him that hard work was important and everyone should be a Cleveland Browns fan. Mike was a friend to everyone, the kind of friend you could always rely on.
There are people who you meet in this world that stick with you and Mike was one of those people. Saying he is one of the best doesn’t even begin to describe him. He leaves behind an amazing legacy that he built brick by brick.
Mike has been married for 46 years to his wife, Leslie (Studlien). He is also the proud father of 6 children, Richard (Katheryn) Van Gundy of Delaware, John (Kelly) Van Gundy of Radnor, Annamarie (Dan) Greenleaf of Prospect, Jacob (Tricia) Van Gundy of Ashley, Gabriel (Rachel) Van Gundy of Upper Sandusky, and Isaac (Taylor) Van Gundy of Prospect; doting grandfather to Nels, Finn, Fritz, Lauren (Jordan), Eli, Jonah, Jack, Titus, Meredith, Amber, Henry, Ovidia, Hazel, Roslyn, Ruby, Gwen, Nora, Waylon, Iris, Wren, and Josephine and great-granddaughter Mallory Moore; mother, Marie Van Gundy of Prospect; brothers, Thomas (Barbara) Van Gundy of Florida and Mark (Roberta) Van Gundy of Delaware; sister, Wendy (Van Goeforth) Van Gundy of Radnor; mother-in-law Janice Bradley; several nieces and nephews.
Mike was preceded in death by his father and his sister-in-law Robin Studlien.
