Michael J. Sullivan, beloved and adoring father, husband, son, and brother, passed away suddenly on September 7, 2018. Mike was a lover of life and an omnivore of experience. His passions and talents were boundless: brilliant lawyer and writer, fierce advocate, deep reader and thinker, winged runner, avid sailor and hiker. He was a warm and generous friend with a huge heart and equally huge sense of humor.

Mike’s career was rich and varied. He was a housing lawyer in the Harlem office of the New York City Legal Aid Society; a federal law clerk and deputy federal court monitor in San Juan, P.R.; a federal public defender in the District of New Jersey; and a partner in the law firms of McElroy, Deutsch, and Mulvaney and Coughlin Duffy, both in Morristown, N.J., and Ellenoff Grossman and Schole in New York City. A past trustee of the Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers of New Jersey, he was elected to the American College of Trial Lawyers in 2016.

Mike leaves his wife, Laura Cohen; children, Adam and Claire Sullivan; mother, Angela Sullivan; siblings Patricia Sullivan, Donald Sullivan, Beth Connelly, Jane Megson, and their spouses; many nieces and nephews; father- and mother-in-law, Marshall and Doris Cohen; and a wide circle of friends. He lost his father, Donald Sullivan, Sr., in 2017.

A celebration of Mike’s life will take place on Thursday, September 13th at the Lake Valhalla Club, 13 Vista Road, Montville, N.J at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, Mike’s family would appreciate donations to Rocking the Boat (rockingtheboat.org) the ACLU of New Jersey (aclu-nj.org) or a charity of your choice.
