Michael's obituary
Michael Stevenson, beloved father, husband, brother, and entrepreneur passed away in his daughter's home in Los Angeles on Wednesday February 16th, 2022 due to complications with Covid. His four adult children were by his side as he peacefully transitioned in the quiet passing of the dawn. He is survived by his wife, Elyse, their 7-year old daughter, Elyana, and his adult children, Michelle, Dawn, Michael and Erik.
Mike was born in Ironton, Missouri on March 9th, 1944 to Frenton Gale (Steve) and Mildred Stevenson. He graduated from Missouri State University in 1967 with a degree in Marketing and Management. He was a serial entrepreneur after leaving a successful career at AON Corporation, as President and CEO of ServicePlan Inc, a wholly owned subsidiary of AON Corp. It was the first insurance company to offer consumer durable service contracts through major retailers in the US. He left to found and run Federal Warranty Service Corporation, a successful start-up that specialized in extended service contracts on consumer durables. He also served on the Service Contract Industry Council, where he played a large role in defining the future of the industry. He successfully sold that company to American Bankers Insurance Group where he served as Sr. Vice President for 2 years.
Inspired by changes in his health and driven to compete in Ironman Triathlons, he left American Bankers to start Healthy Lifestyle, a nutrition products business focusing on education for correct nutrition, supplements, and exercise. From there he joined Critical Period Insurance Agency which focuses on Innovative Insurance Products that are both environmentally and socially driven. He was "an icon in the insurance and warranty industries", as described by his most recent business partner.
Mike was a force of nature and a man who lived his life truly as fully as he could. He was an eternal entrepreneur always looking to do more, be more and serve more. He served on the board of a major LA charity for the homeless, was an elder at his church, started Troop 191 in Redondo Beach and before he left as the Scoutmaster there were well over 20 Eagle Scouts of whom, two were his sons. He was inducted into the Order of the Beaver, the highest honor in scouting, for his leadership both locally and in national scouting.
Mike was an eternal optimist in the face of some incredibly challenging life events and losses, a very determined athlete, competing in 16 IRONMAN triathlons in his 50's (hence getting the nickname "Iron Mike), fathered/raised 5 children, served on the LA Scouts Council/Board, was a business and life mentor to MANY over the years, a devout Catholic, a GREAT dad, and an all around midwestern boy.
He loved to ski and run back when his knees were still good, was an avid cyclist until the end, and was passionate about living a healthy lifestyle. He was an amazing cook and grill master and loved to share gourmet food with his family, make birthdays and holidays very special celebrations, be in service to others, and take care of his family. He often said the thing he was most proud of and his greatest accomplishments were his children. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
During the pandemic, and despite a lot of personal responsibilities and demands on his time and energy, he co-founded and ran a non-profit to help the homeless in his neighborhood in West LA. If you feel called to, please donate in his honor: https://www.wlah.org/donate&n…
