Michael's obituary
It is with deep sorrow and fond remembrance that we announce the passing of Michael Rush Southern, who left us on November 6, 2025. Born on July 19, 1938, in Henderson, Kentucky, to Hazel Marie and Woodrow “W.D.” Southern, Michael’s life was a shining example of kindness, honesty, and humility. He was the kind of person who never met a stranger and whose gentle ways left a lasting impression on all who knew him. Family and friends will forever cherish memories of his quiet wisdom and his skill for lending an ear or offering a steady hand, especially during life’s trials.
Michael’s guiding philosophy— “Do the best you can with what you have”—was the cornerstone of his character. He lived this advice every day, encouraging his loved one to face their challenges with hope and resilience. Many will recall late evenings spent in conversation, where Michael’s calm voice offered comfort or practical wisdom, always delivered with genuine care.
A proud patriot, Michael honorably served his country for four years in the U.S. Navy. This period of service shaped many of the core values he carried throughout his life. After his time in the service, he embarked on a successful professional career, starting on the ground floor of a major corporation and steadily rising through the ranks into management through hard work and dedication.
Michael is survived by his wife of 63 years, Diantha Southern of Mesquite, TX; daughter, Beth Schildt of Garland, TX; son, Michael Sean Southern of Arlington, TX; daughter, Laura McIntyre of El Paso, TX; brothers, Richard Southern of New York, NY, and Todd Southern of El Paso, TX; sister, Phyllis Gunn of El Paso, TX; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren he adored who will continue to uphold the values instilled in them by their "Poppy".
Those fortunate enough to know Michael will remember him for the way he turned life’s simplest moments—like sharing a favorite story or rooting for his grandkids in whatever endeavors they undertook—into lifelong memories. His steadfast love, gentle guidance and unyielding humility will continue to inspire those he leaves behind. Michael’s spirit is not gone but lives on in the lessons he imparted, the kindness he practiced and the love he gave so generously. We mourn Michael’s loss deeply but choose as well to celebrate his remarkable life. His wisdom, humor and compassion remain our guiding light.
Rest in Peace, Michael Southern. Your legacy of love and encouragement will live on in the hearts of those you touched.
God Speed.
