Michael's obituary

In Loving Memory of Michael James Slater

August 8, 2008 – April 6, 2025

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Michael, who left this world far too soon at the age of 16. Born on August 8, 2008 in Mobile, AL, Michael touched the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His warmth, kindness, and unshakable love for others were evident in everything he did.

Though life presented him with challenges — especially after undergoing several brain surgeries given his medical condition beginning at age 11 — Michael faced them all with courage, grace, and an unwavering smile. While he could no longer run, he never lost his passion for sports. Whether watching his favorite teams or cheering on loved ones, his enthusiasm was infectious. He also found joy in video games, where his adventurous spirit and sharp mind truly shined.

Michael’s presence brought light to the darkest moments, and his laughter was a gift that will echo in our hearts forever. He is now free from pain, and while our hearts ache with his absence, we find comfort in knowing he is finally happy and at peace.

Michael is survived by his loving mother and stepfather Laura and Terry Sampson; his father Francis Slater and his partner Lyn Anderson; his cherished sister Olivia Slater; his maternal grandfather, paternal grandparents, and paternal great-grandfather; his adventurous aunt Kristi Megan Vitale, cousins Charlie, Elliott, Alex, and Sophia; and aunt Kelliann Slater, cousins Jordan, Tyler, and Patrick. He is preceded in death by his doting grandmother Carla Vitale; and his uncle Dana Vitale.

Michael attended St. Luke’s Episcopal School in Mobile, AL and Fairhope Middle School in Fairhope, AL before entering Mortimer Jordan High School in Kimberly, AL. Michael was currently in the 10th grade with aspirations to go on to college.

We are eternally grateful for the doctors and staff at USA Children’s and Women’s in Mobile, Dr. Berenstein and staff at Mt. Sinai hospital in New York and many doctors and staff at Children’s Hospital of Alabama.

Michael was a child of God who made the world a better place through his courage, faith, smile, laughter, and love of others. May his memory and inspiration live on forever.
