Michael's obituary
Michael Ames Norton – proud dad and grandpa, artist, engineer, scientist, man of many talents - passed away on Sunday, December 4, 2022 at the age of 70 in Orlando, Florida.
Michael was born to Clyde James Norton and Ruby Jean Miller on September 12, 1952 in Van Nuys, California. He graduated from Canoga Park High School in 1970, where he enjoyed his days surfing on the Pacific and making lifelong friends. Soon after, he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1972, where he served as a Navy Medical Corpsman for the next four years stationed in Charleston, SC and serving aboard the USS John C. Calhoun, SSBN 630.
He continued his education at the University of Houston, graduating with honors with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. He went on to use his education, brilliant mind, and love of science and technology to contribute as a leader, inventor, and mentor in the flooring industry. His career also enabled him to travel the world, experiencing unique cultures and cuisines and meeting incredible friends along the journeys.
In 1973, he met his wife, Debra Norton, at Florida Technological University and 10 years later had a hand in creating what he would consider his proudest and greatest accomplishment: his three kids, Kelly Sprecher, Chase Norton, and Jeffrey Norton. Michael’s light shined brightest as he spent time with his children. He was one proud Dad! Michael always believed in his children, supported them through the peaks and valleys of life, and empowered each of them to do great things and live life to the fullest.
Michael watched his daughter, Kelly, grow from his tiny ballerina to the woman she is today, continually encouraging and inspiring her. Michael had the chance to twirl his daughter one last time as father and daughter and escort her down the aisle at the wedding of Kelly and Vince in April 2022. With his first son, Chase, Michael taught, coached, and instilled a passion for learning and technology. He supported him during his long hikes and difficult outdoor moments. Always proud – always supportive – his love showed in every moment of support and encouragement. From the time spent side by side with his son, Jeffrey, building first-class Pinewood Derby cars to the bass fishing excursions in Dalton, Georgia, many hours were spent bonding and creating special memories together. Their shared passion for creating and building things together continued on year over year. Dad was there to inspire, encourage and empower his children throughout it all.
Not only did Michael shape his own children into who they are today, but his legacy lives on through the impact he has on so many people around him, including his involvement as a World Champion coach in Odyssey of the Mind. A man of many talents, he graciously shared that talent with so many and worked his magic to be a great teacher and empower others to be curious problem solvers.
While a scientist by nature, Michael also had a passion for the arts. His creative outlet initially started with leather tooling followed for many years in woodworking. Upon retirement, Michael found a true passion and talent with painting – pastels, oil painting, watercolors. Walking into his studio, the serene seascapes, majestic landscapes, pet portraitures, and even several whimsical masterpieces fill the space with light and joy. His artistic treasures as well as the friendships he created along the way will be cherished forever.
Michael is survived by his daughter Kelly Sprecher (Vince), his two sons Chase Norton (Jamie) and Jeffrey Norton, grandchildren Maddox Norton and Stryker Powell, brother James Norton (Susan), and ex-wife Debra Norton. He is preceded in death by both his parents, Clyde James Norton and Jean York.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Michael’s honor on Sunday, January 15 at 3:30 p.m., Eastern time at Leu Gardens in Orlando, Florida.
