Michael's obituary
It is with great sadness we share the passing of Michael J. McDougall of Flowery Branch, GA. Michael passed peacefully under the care of Hospice at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center with his family by his side. Born in Peabody, MA on March 11th, 1936 to Elmer and Catherine Quinn McDougall, Michael grew up in Salem, MA where he was a baseball pitcher for Salem High School. Graduating in 1953, Michael went on to join the U.S. Navy, serving his country in the Korean War. After his military service, Michael attended Vesper George School of Art, graduating with a degree in Commercial Arts.
A driven entrepreneur, Michael started an advertising agency out of the basement of his childhood home. Years later, his brother joined the firm and together they formed McDougall Associates, Inc., a successful advertising and public relations company, with clients across New England.
In 2001, Michael and his brother sold the business and he went on to work full-time on his true passions which included golf, painting, and most importantly, spending time with his family. Michael’s interest in golf began as a pre-teen when he provided caddy services at Salem Country Club in Peabody, MA. After becoming a member, Michael was elected President, during the club’s 100th Anniversary. One of Michael’s proudest moments came while serving as President when the club voted to allow women to become full golfing members during his tenure.
Michael was also very involved in shaping the cultural landscape of Massachusetts. He served as a Board Member of the North Shore Music Theater, Montserrat College of Art, and Liberty Mutual. Michael was also a member of various art associations including the Rockport Art Association, Beverly Art League, and the Quinlan Visual Arts Center in Gainesville, GA.
A generous and giving man, Michael often gifted many of his works of art to family and friends intending to share the beauty of our world through his own eyes. Michael's philanthropic endeavors further included serving as a board member for the Commodore Open Charity Golf Tournament and donating to the Fenwick Fund of Bishop Fenwick High School.
Michael is survived by his wife, Irene of Flowery Branch, GA, and sister Jean Geraghty of Peabody, MA. He is also survived by his four children, Michael McDougall of Danvers, MA, Colleen Carter and her husband Ron of Suwanee, GA, Melissa Brown and her husband Scott of Estero, FL and Dan McDougall and his wife Kate of Jacksonville, FL as well as his seven grandchildren: Zachary Carter, Cailyn Carter, Cole Carter, Ellen Brown, Emily Brown, Kyan McDougall and Brynn McDougall. He is predeceased by his brothers, Daniel McDougall and Leo McDougall.
A small gathering will be held in Georgia with a larger celebration of his life to be planned in the upcoming months in Massachusetts.
