Michael's obituary
In Loving Memory of Michael William Matthews (1955-2024)
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael Matthews on April 5, 2024, at the age of 69, after a courageous year-long battle with cancer. Mike was born on January 18, 1955, and grew up in Hinsdale, where he attended Monroe Elementary School and was the youngest of four children. He graduated from Hinsdale Central High School and attended college at Southern Illinois University.
In 1983, Mike married Susan Matthews, and together they raised a beautiful family of four daughters and a son, instilling in them the values of hard work, love, and dedication: Amy Matthews, Melissa Partida (and her husband, Frank), Sarah Burt (and her husband, Todd), James Meador (and his wife, Leonie), and Kathryn Rhea (and her husband, Clint). He was a loving grandfather to Kaya Cooper, Emily Rhea, and granddaughter to be, Charlotte Michaela Pearl Burt, who will miss their grandfather’s warmth and wisdom.
Mike began his career at Knoffsinger Concrete and then went on to work for Altree Remodeling, where he quickly became a skilled carpenter. He started his own business in 1983, and his passion and expertise led him to become a renowned contractor specializing in building custom homes that reflected his dedication to quality and detail. His work not only showcased his craftsmanship but also his passion for creating spaces where families could grow and create memories.
A true sports enthusiast, Mike’s love for the Chicago Blackhawks, Bears, and Cubs was unmatched. He cherished the moments he witnessed his favorite teams achieving the ultimate success, experiences he once thought he might never see. These victories were not just wins for the teams but personal triumphs that he celebrated with the same fervor he brought to every aspect of his life.
Mike’s athletic enthusiasm extended beyond the realm of just watching his favorite teams. He was an exceptional athlete in his own right. Beginning in grade school, Mike played little league and continued to excel in high school, shining in baseball, track, and football. As the quarterback at Hinsdale Central, he was respected and admired by all of his teammates. In his 20s, Mike joined the Hinsdale Men’s Softball League, where his outstanding abilities as a left fielder were unmatched. It was his dream and aspiration to win a championship. A highlight of his softball career was winning a championship in 2004 alongside his son, James. This victory marked the beginning of a string of successes as they went on to secure three more championships together in 2005, 2007, and 2009. These wins were not just a testament to Mike’s skill but also to the unbreakable bond he shared with his son, creating memories that both would cherish forever.
Beyond sports, Mike had a profound love for The Beatles, particularly Paul McCartney’s bass lines that underscored many of their timeless hits. He often spoke with admiration for Paul, John, George, and Ringo, whose music provided the soundtrack to many of the cherished moments in his life. The Beatles’ influence on Mike was evident in his appreciation for melody, harmony, and the simple yet profound storytelling found in their music.
Mike leaves behind a loving brother-in-law, Jim Ruff (and his wife, Mary), his devoted nephews George Masek and son Jordan, Fred Matthews, David Matthews, his loving nieces Sarah Jacobs (and her husband, Trent), and Jeanne Crowder (and her husband, Peter).
Mike was preceded in death by his father, Frederick Matthews, his mother, Helen Matthews, his brothers, Thomas Matthews, Frederick Matthews Jr., and his sister, Patricia Calvert.
Mike Matthews leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and passion. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. His spirit, characterized by his dedication to his family, his craft, and his love for the game, will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have been a part of his life.
A private memorial service will be held to honor his memory, with details to be shared with close friends and family.
Rest in peace, Mike. Your legacy will live on in the homes you built, the games you played, and, most importantly, in the hearts of your beloved family.
