Michael's obituary
Michael Marshall Smith, Sr., age 73, of Glenwood, Illinois, went to be with the Lord on June 3, 2025, at ALIYA of Glenwood nursing home.
Born in Chicago at Cook County Hospital, Michael was the beloved son of the late James
Marshall Smith and Yvonne Lowery. He grew up on the South Side of Chicago, where he attended local schools and developed a strong work ethic that would carry throughout his life.
Michael proudly served his country in the U.S. Army as a Specialist 4th Class in the 33rd Field Artillery Regiment. He was honorably discharged and received medals recognizing his dedicated service. One of his most often-quoted life mottos came from a drill sergeant: “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right.”
He passed this wisdom on to his children and lived it daily.
He was a man who loved working with his hands and had a deep passion for machinery. Over the years, he worked for U.S. Steel, ran his own company—GLL Realtors and Construction—served in maintenance at Sandridge Elementary School, and later operated a successful cleaning business.
Above all, Michael was a man full of the Spirit. He loved the Lord, cherished time with his family, and was known for faithfully dressing in his Sunday best and joyfully playing his tambourine in church. His presence brought joy and strength wherever he went. Michael deeply adored his wife, Solange, and their love was a source of strength, joy, and unwavering companionship throughout their 25 years together.
Michael is survived by his devoted wife of 25 years, Solange Smith; his children: Michael Smith, Jr., Latoya Maddox, Elisee Smith, and Joelle Smith; and his grandchildren: Ariyana Maddox, Eric II Maddox, Marcus Maddox, Michael Smith III (Harley), Tasia Smith, and Malik Smith. Healso leaves behind many siblings: Barbara, Carolyn, Jean, Marcell, Stanley (Deceased), Jerry, Mark, Sheila, Darlene, and Lee.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 14, at 3:00 p.m. at Crossroads Church, located at 23001 Torrence Avenue, Sauk Village, IL.
The family extends special thanks to the caregivers, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, ALIYA of Glenwood, and the Crossroads Church family for their love, care, and support throughout Michael’s health struggles.
