This was from the last time I saw my dad, the day before he passed away. He was confused, irritated at being stuck in a hospital bed and in my mind a little scared as he didn't understand what was going on and why. But he knew who I was and he knew I was there for him.

Before I left, he gave me a hug as tight as he could muster. He said, “I love you Joshua and I miss you.” I replied “I love you too dad and I miss you. And I want you to just rest now.” He said he would, and I think he knew what I meant. He didn't need to hold on anymore for us, for his family. He could be in peace and know that we would be ok. At that moment, as if sensing the tears welling in my eyes, maybe he even felt one on the top of his head, he let go, looked up at me and made a goofy face while sticking his tongue out. I couldn't help but burst out in laughter and said, “thanks Pop, I needed that.” He simply said, “I know.”

I then gave him our hand signal for “Ok buddy,” that we did when I was a kid, again to let him know I was going to be ok and he was ok to let go. He smiled and said, “yup.”

And as I walked towards the door, he said one more thing loud and clear, something he had struggled to do for weeks. “Take care son.” Those were the last words my dad would ever say to me. And I will Pop, I will.
