Mike’s death is so terribly sad for me, the Alliance and education. Personally he was always so supportive and my association with him so enriched my teaching experience. Mike was incredibly energetic, talented and dedicated and he influenced countless numbers of teachers and students making lessons richer and up to date with quality resources and ideas. Most of all was his wonderful sense of community that brought us together and made us all better teachers! I can still hear his voice at workshops addressing everyone’s requests,  questions and concerns and making everyone feel valued. What a gift he was!

Sending peace and positive thoughts to friends and family!!! Knowing that Mike is having more geo-adventures on this next journey, his Indiana friends and colleagues will miss his insight, observations and perspectives. His vision of a geographically literate society and his actions always moving forward toward that vision provide guidance today and well into the future. On behalf of the Geography Educators' Network of Indiana ... THANK YOU, Mike!!!

Dr. Libbee changed the trajectory of so many teachers that taught Geography to our students. He knew that the understanding of Geography could be valuable if teachers could make it more interesting and accessible to all types of learners. Our deepest condolences to his family and close friends.

Kristin, Brook, Dana,

Condolences to you and your families. I had the good fortune to work closely with Mike for many years. Mike was the coordinator of our National Geographic Michigan Geographic Alliance. He was also one of our alliance leaders to whom I often looked for advice and counsel.  In many ways, Michigan was a role model of an alliance network because of his leadership. His contributions to better geography education in schools in Michigan and nationally are formidable. God bless.

Kristin, Brooke, Dana, and your family--This is truly a shock. I think of Michael as endlessly healthy, vibrant, and laughing.

Fifty years ago, Michael and Kristin were my salvation and entertainment! I have followed their adventures with great pleasure as they travelled and celebrated life and family.

Sincere love and condolences to you.

Mike will terribly missed by all who knew and those who were guided by him in their Geography career.  He was my advisor for my Geography major when I transferred to CMU in 1990.  He always wanted things in a very particular way which was never easy; but he encouraged me to be my best.  After I started my career as a Geography teacher, our paths crossed many times.  In 2009, he asked me to come to a summer Michigan Geography Alliance (MGA) training for new Teacher Consultants.  I was honored and excited to become part of this wonderful organization. Over the past twenty years, I enjoyed my time working with the alliance and Mike.  Some of my favorite memories of Mike is at his home along the river.  With his wonderful wife, Chris, they always hosted Alliance gatherings.  I cherish these get togethers.  Finally, my favorite quote of his was "anything for you", whenever a consultant asked for something.

Thank you for your guidance, mentorship and making me a better Geography teacher. I will miss you.

Mike was a wonderful colleague. Always able to find time to share really good ideas/experiences. Some good times (long ago) in Norman. When I think about the most successful geographic alliances, the things that Mike and colleagues were able to do in Michigan really stand out. Very pleased that Mike invited me to visit Central Michigan and share ideas with faculty and students. I will miss him!
