Michael's obituary
Michael Arthur Ledeen, born August 1, 1941, in Los Angeles, California, passed away on May 18, 2025, at 83.
He was a classic of his kind, a not quite modern man who built his own Heathkit computer to help him understand how the machine worked and yet was addicted to the pleasures of fountain pens.
A renowned historian, author, and foreign policy analyst, Michael’s intellect and wit shaped global discourse on democracy and freedom. He studied the evolution of mass movements, particularly communism, fascism and islamism, all forms of authoritarianism and totalitarianism. He was a prolific writer and author of many books, including The First Duce, Perilous Statecraft, and Machiavelli on Modern Leadership. A public intellectual fighting the war of ideas, he advised U.S. administrations, notably during the Reagan era. His public and private advocacy helped free Iranian dissidents like Ahmad Batebi and supported heroes like Natan Sharansky and Vladimir Bukovsky through a group called Resistance International, of which he was a founding member. He earned respect not only for his unique and deep understanding of world events in their cultural and historical context but also because of his ability to synthesize and describe those events in language that was accessible to all.
Michael had a decades long love affair with Italy and all things Italian, from people to art to food to opera. In fact one time he was at an enchanting and beautiful recital given by Cecilia Bartoli and in the receiving line for her, he bowed and asked her to marry him! He was fluent in the most elegant and erudite Italian, using all tenses and all voices which helped him connect deeply to all levels of Italian society.
A self-proclaimed “fashion icon,” Michael dazzled in tailored Italian suits, beautiful Italian silk ties and gorgeous leather shoes, topped by Borsalino hats, his cigar often in hand. His unscripted speeches, laced with humor, captivated and charmed audiences around the world. He generously spent time mentoring young scholars and journalists seeking to understand the world. A lover of jazz, opera, Mel Brooks’ comedy, college basketball, and the Yankees, he befriended legends like Bobby Knight and Tommy Lasorda. An avid bridge player, he was internationally recognized as a master and was the coach for the Israeli National Bridge team which came in second in the world the year he coached. He and his long-time partners won the 2009 Senior Swiss Teams bridge tournament and he did bridge tours with the late Egyptian actor, Omar Sharif.
Above all, Michael cherished family. He met his wife, Barbara, on a blind date in Rome, marrying her 4 months later in 1973. They hosted innumerable high spirited, intellectually invigorating dinner parties where Michael led discussions with friends, young people, other public intellectuals, journalists and lawyers, always including his children, Gabriel, Daniel, and Simone. The basic requirement was to be a good listener and an equally good conversationalist. A devoted father, he performed magic shows at his children’s birthday parties, read bedtime stories like The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and Sherlock Holmes, and encouraged dinner table discussions of life’s big questions.
Michael’s legacy of courage, humor, and love endures in his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched. He is survived by Barbara and their children, Simone, Gabriel (Kelli), and Daniel (Natalie), and grandchildren Talia, Marina, Nathan, Elie, Eyal, and Michaela. May his memory be a blessing.
