Jug's obituary

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved husband, father, Uppa, uncle, and sibling, Michael (Jug) George Kompkoff. Born on December 5, 1948, in Cordova, Alaska, and raised in Tatitlek, Alaska, he left this world on November 11, 2024, in Mount Vernon, Washington.

He was surrounded by the love of his wife and children during his final moments. Jug fought bravely against lymphoma since June 2024; however, complications from bone cancer and organ failure took him from us.

In his youth, Jug was known for his hearty appetite despite his slender frame. His love for reading Archie comic books earned him the affectionate nickname "Jughead," or simply "Jug." A proud graduate of Cordova High School in 1967, he served as class president and was a dedicated member of the basketball team. Jug was a friend to all. His warm spirit often led to long conversations on a trip to the hardware store, where a simple errand could turn into hours of catching up with familiar faces. He had a sparkle in his eye that matched his infectious smile and hearty laugh.

As a lifelong commercial fisherman in Prince William Sound, Jug worked as a gillnetter and purse seiner. He created treasured memories fishing with family aboard the Ms. Jennifer in his favorite spots--inside the rock at Port Fidalgo, Two Moon Bay, and Irish Cove. In addition to fishing, he worked as a laborer and contributed to oil spill response efforts over the years.

During the school year, Jug took great pride in raising his children in North Bend and Langley, Washington. He cherished every moment spent watching them play sports and supporting their various achievements. After his children moved away, he enjoyed regular coffee meet-ups with close friends at Payless.

In retirement, Jug and his wife found joy in La Conner, Washington, at Shelter Bay. They quickly forged friendships and delighted in cruising on their yacht named “Last Set.” Family visits to Anchorage, Alaska were frequent as they loved spending time with their children and grandchildren.

Jug is preceded in death by his parents, Carroll Kompkoff and Mabel (Allen) Kompkoff, as well as his siblings Caroline and Gary Kompkoff. He is survived by his loving wife Jennifer (Kreider) Kompkoff; children Krystal Kompkoff, Noelle Kompkoff, Gabriel Kompkoff, Michael Kompkoff; daughter-in-law Meghan Kompkoff; and grandchildren Dmitri Kompkoff-Anderson, Aleric Kompkoff-Anderson, Jackson G. Kompkoff, Kade Kompkoff, and Jack A. Kompkoff, as well as siblings Gene Kompkoff, Andrea Olson, Sylvia Kompkoff-Purvis, Phyllis Sanford and Caleb Kompkoff and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
