Mike's obituary

Mike Perry, also known as Michael John Perry, passed away unexpectedly in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which struck our community on September 26. He left us in the early morning hours of October 3 while we were all asleep and still without electricity.

Mike was born on March 5, 1952, and passed away at the age of 72. He was the beloved husband of Lisa Perry, his wife of 37 years. Together, they had two children: Sarah, who lives in Chapel Hill with her partner, JP, and Michael, who lives in Denver, Colorado. Mike is also survived by his sister, Ann, and her husband, Stan, as well as his two brothers, Dan and Chuck.

Mike and Lisa moved to Sherwood Forest in November 2019, instantly falling in love with the community. Mike affectionately called their home on 1368 Cardinal Road his “tree house” and proudly spoke about this special community to anyone he met. They quickly became integral members of the community, with Lisa serving as Co-Chair of Women’s Workshop and volunteering with Rise and Shine and Sharing House in Brevard. Mike supported Lisa wholeheartedly, often saying she was the love of his life and that he was the luckiest man alive to be her husband. He often said, “If Lisa is happy, then I’m happy,” a true testament to his devotion.

Mike was born in Lebanon, TN, and moved frequently as a child before his family settled in Sandy Springs, GA, where he graduated from North Springs High School. After high school, he served in the Air Force, stationed in Spokane, Washington. Later, he moved back to Atlanta, where he worked as a nightclub manager, booking acts like Johnny Paycheck and Pure Prairie League at Scooters in Sandy Springs. In 1987, he met and married Lisa, and they started Atlanta Landscape Materials. Shortly after, they welcomed their first child, Sarah Ann, in 1991, followed by Michael Harrison in 1995.

An adventurer at heart, Mike loved to travel, the outdoors, and hiking, and he was an accomplished water skier and sailor. He explored destinations like Belize, Ecuador, Guatemala, Colombia, Chile and New Zealand with his family. One of his most treasured experiences was earlier this year – a journey to Patagonia with his daughter by his side.

Though it wasn’t a long life, Mike filled every moment with adventure and purpose. His spirit will forever be with us, here in the forest he loved. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
